in my opinion the only way islam will survive in the Somali community is by birth rates. Number of Somalis losing faith is increasing rapidly. especially in the youth below 30. I predict a big change in the religious demographics of Somalis very soon. Expect to see more Somalis claiming non religion soon.

Correct. Somalis being 100% Muslims are a myth, a big fat myth. Plenty of Somali Atheists and Agnostics, mainly in the age group of 18-35.

As Abdi Johnson said, I googled Somali Atheists, and I ended up in a reddit thread.

Calling all Somali ex-mooses out there. I feel it might be (I could be wrong) slightly different being a Somali ex-moose.
All my life I grew up with the idea more than 99% of our nation is sunni muslim, and to be honest, it mostly feels that way. We recognise each other quite easily and our people are some of the most judgemental out there, making it difficult to live a double life.
I love many aspects of our culture, the language, the food, the level of comfort I feel at my fellow country member's home etc. It's just the mentality I cannot deal with.
And though I do not agree with all she says, I admire Ayaan hersi Ali for standing up for herself and what she believes in and wish I could have some of the courage she has, she truly is an inspiration on many levels.

Another Somali ex-moose in the house! SomaliPerson, thanks for starting this thread as its getting a lot of us talking. I've been an ex-moose for awhile but haven't really focused on looking for others out there. I'd love to hear how all of you handle reconciliation with family. I am finanically independent and decided to take my own path (no praying, no saying anything Muslim except for the "Salaams" and "Insha'Allah" purely out of habit) which resulted in so many arguments with family that I stopped talking to them. And after 2 years or so, my dad started telling other family members that he is sorry he has been mean to me (but not directly stating this to me..go figure) and wants to reconcile. So how do you reconcile and keep your ex-Moose head on the right way (I love my ex-Moose life and wouldn't give it up for anything)? Any feedback?

I'm in a similar situation, my family and extended family disowned me when I refused to attend Ramadan prayer services. It was difficult at first, I was ostracized by the local Somalian community where I live, received death threats and had an attempted kidnapping done to try and force me to go to Kenya. In retrospect I'm glad that I left and that I have no ties to the community any longer, Somalians are insane, they fight over stupid reasons, they don't listen to logic and prefer which doctor shamans instead of actual western medicine.
I have tried reconciliation with my family hasn't been too successful.

Somali disbeliever here. IMO, Somalis seems to have adopted all the worst aspects of Islam while passing over the few good spots. I don't think I'll be able to convince many of my friends and family to abandon superstition, but I'm doing my best to encourage them to enjoin the good of Islam and forget the bad.
