Five years ago they could have extracted every concession save independence from the savage southerners, whom were camped en-mass in Kenyan hotel lobby's at the time. They could have had the capital in Hargeisa and rewritten the constitution.

Instead it was written in Garowe and the rest is history.
I expect the iidoor to remain intransigent for tears to come, while their people remain in the wilderness.

Typhoon,

Resorting to personal insults only defines your brain capacity but Ad Hominems aside your wishes are not facts.

Lets apply your standard of logic..

You state that Somaliland was an independent territory until the referendum took place (1961) but you also state that Somaliland was only an independent territory for 5 days. No matter how you twist and turn, it's impossible.

Somaliland attained statehood on June 26, 1960 and that state was recognized by the United Kingdom. It fulfilled the criterions of a state just like the countless African states that gained independence. Chronologically Somaliland was the 4th African country in 1960 to gain independence.

There's no such thing as Somali territorial integration, it's just wishful Walaweyn rhetoric. The Act of Union was the binding agreement that would legitimize the unification process.

For the 1961 referendum to become valid despite the absence of a legal union there had to be separate referendums in each territory and that never happened.

I don't understand the goal of these talks?

Its obvious Somalia will never agree to recognizing a huge part of its territory as an independent state. Somaliland on the other hand have absolutely no intention of "uniting" with Somalia.

So what's the end goal?

Tbh Somalia is in way better position than SL (self explanatory), plus dhulbahante, warsangali, gedabursi and dirta waqooyi can be politically bargained with separately causing a huge rift in the region.

What can Somaliland do politically besides forming a pact with ethiopia (who could careless aslong as no somali region is powerful). That's about the only card I see that can be of use for the SL party.

Since when did Somaliland become a part of Somalia?

Somaliland precedes Somalia as a sovereign nation.

You can bribe who you want but it's all about the reality on the ground. The day Somalia openly supports the so called "unionists" in Somaliland, that's the day they signed their own death certificate. The only reason why they're allowed to "revolt" is because Isaaq politicians actually believe these people have genuine opinions about Somaliland and "Somali unity" when their entire hatred for Somaliland is based on their hatred for Isaaq hence their smear campaign that Somalis actually buy these day. For instance that we're Somalidiid, that we opposed a Somali union in 1960, that we hate the Somali ethnicity when none of it is true.

The aim of these talks was to end Somalia's illegitimate claims on our country because Somalia is not the equivalent of the (illegitimate) Somali republic nor can Somalia represent it while being one of the constituent states of that republic, Somaliland being the other.

Siilaanyo and Kulmiye did the biggest mistake by changing our previous stance which was no talks until Somalia stops claiming our territory because it legitimizes Somalia claims.

Geopolitical realities will eventually force Somalia to end this situation. Can you imagine a rogue state within your borders? It is untenable.

Somalia has no legitimate claims on Somaliland though, so I don't understand these geopolitical realities you're talking about.

Somalia has no right to claim Somaliland just like it has no right to claim Djibouti, K5 and NFD under the pretext of "Somaliweyn".

Btw, apart from the terrorism, your country Somalia is more profitable in a chaotic state.

Well you may it see that way but Somalia does not and neither does the IC. If Somalia was to exert its claim on the north through treaties, preventing SL from getting into certain agreements, or even military, no one would claim it doesn't have the right to just to do it through dialogue and cooperation.

It's not my point of view, it's facts.

It's going to be interesting to see how the IC will approach this problem the coming months. The only countries who support Somalia's expansionist claims are the Gulf countries and Egypt who are afraid of the starving Xabeshi boogeyman.

However if we look at history such as gaining independence as two separate states, the absence of a legal union, the resolution passed at the OAU in 1964 that makes the colonial borders sacrosanct, one quickly realizes that Somalia has a very thin case. The AU fact finding mission to Somaliland in 2005 states that our case is unique and that Somalia has no judicial claims over our land whatsoever.

Somalia can't prevent anyone from anything. It can't prevent the Bantu guardianship Jubbaland, so what makes you think it can stop Somaliland, a separate country?
