He was one of those one hit wonders that populate Somali literature who recite one famous piece and never heard about again. In addition to what Xplaya highlighted above, it is worthwhile to rememeber that colonialism was not seen as an imposition act by the overwhelming majority of the people as there was no national or patriotic loyalty. The Somalis pride and loyalty and passion lay not in the concept of nationahood or nation state but in his clan and subclan. It was not till the 40s that somalis `felt' and became aware of their Somaliness. Prior to that when Ethiopians attacked Habr Yonis for non-payment of gibir(last time was in 1971 at place called daba goroyale) the Habr Jeclo next door rejoiced because as far as they were concerned a potentail enemy is being taken out!

The first time Somali realised there si a wider somaliness and felt kinship and a sense of nationhood was in the 40s(which this poem comes from). It grew throughout the 50s when thousnads of isaqs wearing the `weer' deathband flooded into the streets of every town and village because they suspected rightly the Britsih was colluding with Ethiopia over Ogaden. This was Isaqs feeling for Daroods because they raelised they were fellow Somalis being betrayed by foreigners. The British colnial authorites were so concerned they tried and failed to buy Ogaden back from Ethiopai offering two million pounds a huge sum at the time. Hargeisa and Mogadishu also witnessed huge demos over the NFD issue.

But before WW2 the Somali Isaq nomad was more concered with survival and raiding teh camels of teh next door clan than who rules Berbera. The idea of `Somaliland' or somalia or somaliness meant not a thing.

And the Britsih had no time for somaliland either. they would have left teh place altogether but they thought it might give wrong ideas to teh other african countries. this was `cololnialism light' if there ever was one. the Somalilanders were not humiliated or harrassed or belittled in any form or shape. The British did not even bother to collect taxes from nomads because they knew it will cause veritable war.

But what completely defeats your Daroodist propoganda myth about Sayyid's supposed freedom fighting is the one they cannot expalin: why did he not start the liberation war in his own home territory which was under far worse gaal colonila rule?
