From what I remember--Dir --is not exactly an 'Odey'! How can you call Isaaq a 'subclan' of Dir?? Darood also have Dir --as their great grand mother. I agree--Dir is a recognizable entity in itself--but let 'it' --not squize itself into the populus category. Sub nothing like the Djiboutians and midgos seem to cherish to do that. I think Dir should be proud ---ALL to themselves. Also a little brighter, lighter complexion would be great to take a break from the extreme madoow badaan. Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing Laughing

Basra...Look at this paranoid goat fukker wh'ore who always have to say something about ogadens people. Why the insults Iidoor wh'ore, could it be because you can't debate like a human being you have to stoop to the level of the crying and calling me names.I know your people are still recovering from what Sayyid Mohamed used to do to them, but that was in the past move on you hungrey who're.

Ogaaden is something to be proud they have brough something to the table.More people claim to be ogaaden than any other clan, thats how much people wish they were ogaadens. What have iidoor brought to the table for somalia.Nothing really---I was expecting one of your Iidoors would bring something plausible on the table, other than their inferiority complex and hoeness. You gotta love it nayaa---its an honor being a ogaaden.

Galol,

I am glad you showed some respect to your nomad culture and their word-crafting skill---poems. Not to mention, you picked four powerfull poems from heavy weight poets.

4. Sidii baan (circa 60s, Anonymous Contemporary Dhulbahante poet)

This poet is Aadan Carrab the last poet of the 20 centry heavyweight poets. And here is some the poem.

Muqdishaba naloogama horeyn, magan Ilaaheye
Sidii baan manjaha ugu socdaa, motor li'idee
Sidii baan maqaar ugu gam'aa, meel la ii dhigaye
Sidii baan maqaar uga toshaa, Maas faraaro lehe
Sidii baan miraha uga gurtaa, --- Toomaade
.......
Bal muxuu micna'a oo uu i taray minister-kaan doortay?

Aadan Carrab was, for sure, a poet who skillfuly uses his words like lethal weapon. One time he was guest of BBC Somali and was asked why many poets were from Buuhoodle. And his answer was simple:" Biyaha Baliyada Buuhoodle ayaa sababta inay Buuhoodle kasoo baxaan rag gabya oo badan sida: Sayid Maxamed Cabdule Xasan, Cali Dhuux, Ismaaciil Mire, Samatar Baxnaan, Aniga, Axmed Dirir, Galoos, .Ducaale Aadan Qoolaab,Cumar Cigaal,Bidhiidh,.Nuur Aadan IWM".

Taasna waxa i soo xasuusisay maqaal aan hore ugu akhriyey website -kale oo cinwaankiisu ahaa "Maan ku hadhka Gabayadii Reer Buuhoodle".

"Cabdi Galayax is a kid he is still alife and we are talkingabout old heavy weights , poets who lived 150 years ago. "

Cabdi Galayax, although he is a living poet can be considered a "bridge poet", the poets who bridged the modern era and the distant nomadic past of Somalia. While a living poet he can be considered on a par with the greats of Somali history and combines his mastery of the Somali language and poetry with Ferocious personal bravery and distinction in the battles between his family, the redoubtable warriors of the Sade, and their neighbours Hawiye and many other fractions of the Daarood.

Samay buu lahaa tolkay Sadiyo maasheeye
weligii Sabuubaha dagaal waw sinaan jiraye
Soomaaliyoo idil haddaan sare u faaleeyeyt
Sinjigaanu nahay geesinimo waw saxeex dhigane.

Dawlad Sade I am disappointed that u published Cabid Galaayax's memorable poem about their assault on the Ogaadeen. This is not the proper venue after all.

Better to have presented his rebarbative verses when he destroyed the Cayr:

Gob ninkaan ka dhalay ciilka waysaga gaboobaaye
Guubaabadaan faray tolkay waa ku guullamaye
Gefba haygu noqotee Hawiye waa la guursadaye

After he destroyed a Hawiye army he even disdained a poem to celebrate the victory. When he was forced he included this memorable line:

Iska Gowrac mooyee Hawiye guul ku faan ma lehe

The history of Mareexaan poetry is long and luminous. Aadan Gurey's poem on aging is considered a classic. Born circa 1840 in Ximan, he lived to a ripe old age.

Todobaatan iyo toban miyaan tiriyey waageyga
Sidda wiil tarada ceel marshay oo timaha deebeeyey
Tin madow miyaan laga dayeyn aniga tuurkayga

Iba-toosan leeyeey haday na hor tislaynaysay
Tog biyo leh haddaan keenay oon koron ku taysaynay
Sidaan wax u tabayn jiray miyaan taabi kari waayey
Allahayoow tahliishii janaan adiga kaa tuugay

Faarax Afcad and his epic poems in the Dhulbahante country when he was searching for a mount to replace his beloved horse that succumbed. He was convinced, and rightly so, that he could secure an adequate replacement in the Nugaal valley among the Dhulbahante whose horses are the most superior breed in Somalia. After composing many poems including this famous one in the presence of the Dhulbahante Garaad

I will present those poems another day but this poem is also one of the best from Afcad as classifies horses by their coat colour and the various advantages and disadvantages of each colour :

Ashkir Orodkii waa markuu oofa weyn yahaye
Ololaha nin jecel baan ahaee yuusan ii imanin

Adin gaab arooryada horuu ugugufleeyaaye
Uur yacay abaar kama baxee yuusan ii imanin

Bullaale af adaygaan ku nacay aar ha soo rido e
Niman Urursan buu kuu geshaa yuusan ii imanin

Nin ugaadhsadaa Xamarka jecel orod dambeedkiise
usha iyo dhawaaquu sugiye yuusan ii imanin

Hadduu oomo qaajaha naftay kala aguugaane
Aroorkii maqnaa kuguma simee yuusan ii imanin

Ma irdhaysna oo Caynab waa faras Ogaadeene
Odaybaa ubbada loo sudhaa yuusan ii imanin

Afar midable oofta iyo fankiyo adhaxdu weynaatay
Oogada madoobow BAROOR ubaxa baan dooni

That is our lesson on Somali poetry for the day[/quote]

Basra, I hope you will agree with it.

"Ethnically, Isaq belongs to the Dir clan family. Of the four main Dir branches, Isaq belongs to Mohamed Maha Dir. Other Maha Dir sub-clans include Biyomal, Bajimal and Quranyob. The other Dir clan families in the north are the Gadabursi and Issa, who belong to Madaxweyne and Madobe Dir, respectively. "

"There were blood baths between Dhulbahante and Majeerteen were upwards of 600 Dhulbahante were killed when forces numbering in thousands engaged in the Dharoor valley in the 1860s. So Furious were the Dhulbahante they vowed to burn Bender Qaasim. An American adventurer witnessed the march of the Dhulbahante but was forced to fleee when the Dhulbahante and Warsangeli engaged in a firefight and things got hairy for him."

Cilmiile, for some reasons I encountered a document that carries this tragic tale, among other things, which took place around that time 1860s. This is the most devastating war in the history of Somalia.

An MJ man was killed by a Warsanglei man. But prior family feuds and clan raids existed and both parties were tired of each other. The MJ Sultan raised an army of 7000, while Warsangeli raised an army of 4000. The big powers clashed and they possessed modern weapons unavailable to other Somalis. They devastated each other extremely bad.

The author is somehow biased and bases his tale on Isman II 's tradition, but more importantly he connects this armed clash with the one you mentioned observed by the American soldier. In fact, the American wasn't an adventurer but was an officer , Charles Graves, of the Egyptian army. Even though , traditionally, both sides (MJ and Wr) claim to have an upper hand in that war, the author influenced by Majerten Historian, says that the MJ prevailed in that war and Dhulbahante had allied with the Warsangeli.

So he says, in one battle, 800 Warsangeli men were killed in a Nine-hour battle. And in another battle, as you said, in Dharor valley, 600 Dhulbahante were killed and nearly "exterminated".

How stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The author cites several sources. Though he only provides one evidence in relevance to the larger number of deaths of Dhulbahante, Warsangeli's number comes from traditional sources.

I happened to find one of the books, "Americans in the Egyptian Army" by Pierre Crabites.

The book, a comprehensive reports of the activities of the American officers in the Khedivial Army. Khedive Ismail had asked for protection from the United States. He argued, "If Americans were sufficiently powerful to expel France from Mexico, they were the men whom he needed to give driving power to his arms." in order to extend his empire.

In pages 228-38, the author summarizes GRAVES' Reconnaisance of Cape Guardafui.

"He Felt that all men of colour are alike, whether they come from Somaliland or Augusta, Georgia. His object in writing the appendix was probably to prove to his New England chief that the latter took the negro races too seriously and attributed to them sins which were no theirs. But, be all this as it may, the Annapolis man pointed out to the West Pointer that the Somalis are divided into four great tribes. The names they bear are : the Mijjertains, the Oursangallis, (Warsangeli), the Ishacks and the Isaacs. The Mijjertains are the most numerous and the most savage.....................The Mijjertain Somalis claim descent from a ferocious and fanatical Arab named Darot, who was expelled from his own country aboud A.D 700. He married Dubara, daughter of Dogolla and sister of King Durr. She was a pure-blooded negress. The great grandson of this union was Harti, who became chief of the tribe. He had a son named Mijjertain, who gave his name to the race. Harti also had a nephew called Oursangalli, who did not get along with Mijjertain, broke away from the parent stock and became the head of the Oursangallis. The other tribal names were acquired more or less the same."

These are the tribes he only mentions in the book. The reconnaissance transpired after a secret treaty between England and the Khedive in 1877 assigning the Khedive several territories including all of the Horn. They attempted to bring Cape Gardafui under the Egyptian rule, but due to financial problems coupled with the Mahdist revolt, the plan was aborted.

The biased author i refered in my above comment, Kerril, does mention this in the following paragraph, so I don't know why he made the same case for the Warsangeli in the battle, drawing conclusion from the observation of Graves' papers who indeed witnessed the battle of Dhulbahante and Majerten. I don't even know if the two clans, Wr and Dh, had allied for this cause or for that matter the war events took place at the same time. So he fails to provide solid evidence in his conclusion of that disbelievingly large number of deaths.

The only thing the sources mention in reference to Oursangallis/Warsangeli is that they are one of the four great tribes of Somalia and thus they don't get along with Majerteen.

Xaarplaya,

That is what I am talking about when I tell u that the Ciidagale are a small and insignificant minnow tribe. The man from whom the vast quantity of Ciidagale are descended was alive to see the English(people like Faysal Cali Waraabe the madman of Somaliland politics). The picture of the Suldaan Guuleed was a very frail old man. He was probably in Berbera to intercede on behalf of his young great grandson, the foolish Xuseen Xasan, who messed with the cunning Habar Awal. I do know which is greater your idiocy or foolishness to sugest that Suldaan Guuleed lived in the seventeenth century. You can find his picture and his story in the book by Frances Swayne the sister of Suwayn Cawar the man darwiishes blinded in the battle of beerdhiga. A woman's pleasure through Somaliland.

Today Garxajis are in their historic positiion. Weak, poor, divided, politically disenfranchised, preyed upon by and surrounded by more powerful rival tribes; Completely marginalized politically and economically and serving as clients.

There was a brief lull of Garxajis tribal expansion after the destruction of the Daraawiish empire. But even this was a zero sum exercise as the land they gained from the Ogaadeen, they lost to Habar Jeclo who filled the vacuuum when the English chased the Habar Yoonis out of British Somaliland. the fratricidal wars betweeen these two Isaaq lineages came as a result of unsuccesful HY attempt to reclaim their land after the Ogaadeens reclaimed their lands in the 30s.

Ladnaantuba waxay kuu ahayd laba Dharaaroode.

So fearful were the HY of Ogaadeen rennaisance and retribution after Cali Dhuux's Guba poems of Incitement and revenge that they went so far as to curse Cali Dhuux in poetry and did their best to placate the Ogaadeen with soothing words of the Grandeur of the Ogaadeen.

Ina Dubbe
Iyaguba kun jeer bay dunsheen dowlada Isaaqe

Ismaaciil Cigaal Bullaale almost cried with calaacal

Nin da'yari dambaab iyo ha galo, diradirayntaase
Diintii Rasuulkiyo haddaad, daacadda ujeeddid
Oo aadan dariiqada ka bixin, duudkii Nabi Aadan
Oo madaxu deebtaa ku yahay, waa digniin dhab ahe
Sidee baad dawaar ugu rogtaa, dunida geestaada?...

and finished up by cursing Cali Dhuux

Haddaad guuto noo soo duntoo daabcadde u dhiibtay
Nabsi daalay baan kula sugiye duugga bal aan dhowro

Maxamed Fiin
Ogaadeenku waa gama'sanyee gamasyo haw dhiiibin
Godobta ha ogeysiin rag waa garacyo shaydaane

even going so far as to divert Ogaadeen attention by recalling the Crimes commited by the Cali Geri against the Ogaadeen

Gondagooye nimankii dhigaad gacal ahaydeene
Cabdi Muxumud Gabanuu ka tegay goraygii dheeraaye

Cabdi Muxumud is the son of Muxumud Waal, the mad Ogaadeen chieftain whose modus operandi was to Load his enemies like Donkeys and burden Camels until a brave young reer dalal kid struck back

Kuwuu Muxumud Waal raray hadduu saanta uga kaadsho
Kulcad uma dileenoo ciyoon kor ma geliyeene
Ragow kibirka waa lagu kufaa kaa ha la ogaado

I have already described the Ogaadeen counterattack and how utterly broken the Garxajis became. No need for me to rehash it here.

Today Garxajis can be found west of Danood and north of a line intersecting Awaare and Danood. I was talking to an old Habar Yoonis man of some knowledge at the time when they are fighting in Daroor, Habar Yoonis and Ciidagale being in a narrow corridor hugging the Somali Ethiopian border and the old man was explaining that they will crush Ciidagale and the Ethiopians know we are right he was saying. The Chief Ethiopian administrator went there and told the Ciidagale that Habar Yoonis have been paying Gibir here for unknown number of years. Comedians these Garxajis Very Happy

When they are not fighting over small dry and fallow strips of land, The Garxajis are being starved by angry Ogaadeens who are incensed that the Samaroon Administration that Rules the Isaaq is detaining Ogaadeen civilians in Hargeysa. They take their revenge by blowing up all Isaaq Commercial trucks resulting in widespead Hunger and Economic stagnation for the GarabCas Garxajis.

I will say a few things about Daarood ku Xaar and Dhurwaale

Dhurwaale after the Ogaadeens smoked Ciidagale, Qawdhan Ducaalle pleaded for help from all corners of Isaaqdom.

Waayadanba Dhuu baan xidhay oo, dheg uma noolayne
Anuunbaa dhabriiraye ragii, waa dhalasho raacaaye

Habar Yoonis dhudaheeda badan, waysu dhawnahaye
Nin walaalkii soo dhinac degoo, dhiirran baan ahaye
Isaxaaqna dheeraadku waa, xeerki noo dhacaye

Kama dhawrsadaan abid hadii, uu dagaal dhaco'e
Dhiigyacabbadii Habar-Jeclaa, dhaanka soo rarane
Dhulbuteeye waan galin hadaan, dhiman Xigaalkay'e

enough said about that

Xarbi dheere, the fearless Ogaadeen warrior and poet gave this serious warning to a bunch of Garxajis waterign their Camels:

Goortay magaaladu dhashaad, dhadarbiyeysaane
Dhurwaa yahay ha iga siisanina dhar iyo soor toona
Niriggaad ka sii dhaylyeysataan, dhagar u qoondeeya
Dhaqaaleeya geeliinnu way, naga dhexeeyaaye

If you kill so much as one young calf I will consider it a blood offense against myself Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

So insidious and widespread did Ogaadeen attacks become that the British Somaliland administration became alarmed when the Attacks reached the outskirts of Burco. They sent an urgent cable to London to intercede immediately and request Ethiopian help in the matter. A comprehensive report on the matter was sent to the Colonial Office later on.

Situation on Abyssinian-British Somaliland Frontier: Ogaden Dacoits raiding British Somaliland aided by the Dolbahanta, includes a report on the Dacoits in the Burao District. .

Daarood ku Xaar,

3 HY poets from 3 different and large lineages singing in a triumph against one of the smallest Majeerteen lineages speaks for itself.

To my knowledge , Cawad Khuurshe of the Muuse Carre, Yawle, Muuse Ismaaciil and Feedhoole of the Reer Weyd made poems to mark the occasion of the killing of 29 Biciidyahan warriors who were ambushed near Gaashaamo after HY got wind of the Biciidyahan plans to assault the reer Caynaansghe.

It was the custom of the Biciidyahan after they gained huge firearms from the italians to humiliate and kill the Garxajis men and steal their women and livestock. They became the bogeymen of the Hawd when they allied their innate and famous ferocity and fighting spirit with quantities of modern weapons. The Garxajis trembled at the mere mention of Biciidyahan.

Despite all this, I would consider it unseemly that all HY should have been so extravagant in their celebration in winning one battle against one of the smallest lineages of Majeerteen. When the Brothers of Cali Ibraahim(Biciidyahan), the Reer Maxmuud were attacked by the Dhulbahante in revenge for an earlier offense, the tally of few hundred camels looted and 8 men killed was considered such a puny victory that Aadan Carab rounded on the dhulbahante army who brought home such a puny victory.

And here we have the Garxajis celebrating the killing of a few biciidyahan in the 21st century. The reason for the outburst of triumphalism is in the bitterness and humiliation caused by repeated and unanswered Biciidyahan attacks on the Garxajis.

These lines from Yawle are instructive, taken from his poem when Cabdi Gahayr insinuated the decline of the HY:

Biciidyahan CARTAMAY miyaanaan curub ka kaw siinin

You are correct my friend. the battle in which the Warsangeli and Majeerteen fought is the one described by Aw Muse Ismaaciil in his epic poem darbadaaley. They were a series fo battles. this one in which the Majeerteen took victory was a revenge war mounted in response to an earlier majeerteen setback. The great Warrior Afdhaal made a poem about it called Qaracan Majeerteen. I am loath to dip into these fratricidal skirmishes among the Daarood brotherhood but they are history and cant be hidden. We can only learn from them. And you are correct about the source being mr Graves and American Soldier in the Army of Egypt but you are relying on the original material. I have only seen second hand acoounts and quotations of his work.

Perhaps you should jot down a note on these episodes.
