Re: Mohamed Siad Barre (Rest in Peace)
Amiin, Bro Muktaaar !
Who left the Qule out
So many Ilkoyar popping out of the woodwork
Where were the Ilkoyar in 1991 when they abandoned Mogadishu instead of putting up a good fight to defend Siyaad ?
http://www.netnomad.com/barregrnfldobit.html
Obituary to Siyaad
Favorite part ( this must be why the Ilkoyar defend him so much):
"Meantime, greedy relatives and hangers-on occupied themselves by securing ever more uneconomic loans, foreign exchange advances and unfulfilled contracts. They poached and destroyed wild fauna on a prodigious scale, not only in Somalia but across her borders in Ethiopia and particularly Kenya. The trade in ivory was so vast and profitable that Siad's own family became deeply involved. Siad himself was not, however, much interested in amassing personal wealth, but he could be vindictive to anyone who opposed any member of his wider family."
In the end, THE GREAT SIYAAD became a Qaxooti, Kicked Out of KENYA, then exiled to NIGERIA ONLY TO BE A VICTIM OF NIGERIAN CRIME & INSULTS by local Nigerians:
For a time after his flight, Siad was accommodated in some style at the expense of the Kenyan government, but popular indignation and a press campaign led the Kenyan president, Daniel arap Moi, to refer the problem to the President of Nigeria, Maj-Gen Ibrahim Babangida, then also chairman of the Organisation of African Unity. Siad's entire party was evacuated by plane to Lagos, although some were refused refugee status and returned.
Although treated well by the Nigerian authorities, the fallen dictator was paid scant respect by the average Nigerian, and his home was robbed more than once. Unable to the end to accept responsibility for the famine and anarchy which has accompanied thesuccession struggle in Somalia, Siad died a frustrated and embittered man.

Re: Mohamed Siad Barre (Rest in Peace)
Naaima, insulting a dead man is one thing, talking about his achievements is another thing. There is nothing wrong with discussing the latter whilst the former is a grave sin.

muktaar, the 1988 shelling and bombing was something that shouldn't have happend. M S Barre did not give the order to carry out these shellings. The decision to shell and bomb Hargeisa when the SNM members hid behind the civilians was taken by Vice President Maxamed Cali Samatar who was the acting president of that time. He admitted this on a bbc interview when he was asked why Hargeisa was shelled, he said "I ordered it to squash the rebels with brute force."
//waxaan xasuustaa 1988 dhammaadkiisii oo lagu waraystay Cali samatar BBC-da oo la yidhi: "magaaladii Hargeysa maxaa madaafiicda loo-la dhacay?" Waxa uu ku jawaabay anigaa amray oo Haddee! maxaa kale oo aanu samayn karaynay, markay budhcaddu soo gashay, Haddee! Waa in xoog looga qabtaa".//
The Times (issue 1986) writes:
"The most likely replacement is the Vice-President, Lieutenant-General Mohamed Ali Samatar, who assumed power when General Siad Barre was injured in the crash. He is not of the same clan as the President."
Reuters News (1988) writes:
"Siad Barre, who is aged somewhere between 70 and 80, was seriously injured in a car accident two years ago and although the government says that he has fully recovered, doubts persist over his state of health.
The president still makes frequent public appearances. But they admit that the chain-smoking army general spends most of the time sleeping."

I hate when people just argue blinded by hate of qabiil walaahay...
Taariikhdii Aabbe Siyaad waa la wada ogyahay oo cidina ma beddeli karto eh...ama la kaalaya wax dhaama ama iska aamusa...Yaa Ilaahay yaqaan...
Waxaan aad uga cadhoodaa markaan arko qof ku doodayaa...Isagaa u horseeday halaagga Somaaliya...Waar wax nin ah oo xinniinyo leh oo fekeri karaa ma jiro miyaa? Dadku ma waxay wada ahaayeen cawaan khaladka uu qof galo ka daba gala?
Hadda ma waxaad leedihiin xataa aakhiro la weydiin maayo qof walba camalkiisii ee Siyaadbaa la weydiinayaa?
Jalaayaal, nin kasta falkii uu galay isaga ayey khaas u tahay... Kii wanaag ka taliyey isaga ayey khaas u tahay, kii halaag ka taliyeyna isaga ayey khaas u tahay...Wallee isagaana la weydiinayaa maalinta qiyaame...
I can't believe after almost two decades we are trying to blame our shortcomings to marxuum Siyaad Barre...
Xukuumaddii askartu ma lihi malaaig bay ahayd oo khalad ma ayna gelin...laakiin waxaa I qarso yidhi wixii ka dambeeyey...

Siyaad was wrong to expel the soviets.
Geeddi and Cabdulaahi are Somali heroes. They returned the lost Somali state.
Somalia is back in business thanx in no small part to their outstanding and firm leadership

Nope, maaha Demure...

Re: Mohamed Siad Barre (Rest in Peace)
My foremost criticism of the late president is his order to execute 10 pious sheikhs who publicly opposed his Marxist laws that directly contradicted Islam. May Allah forgive, have mercy on those 10 pious sheikhs and reward them with jannatul firdous, aamiin. Please read a Fatiha for them.

Re: Mohamed Siad Barre (Rest in Peace)
How come peeps get emotional whenever Barre's legacy is broached? If you're going to discuss someone's legacy you must leave your subjective personal feelings at the door and evaluate facts dispassionately. Else all we'll end up with is competing subjective views masquarading as facts. Only one person AbdiWahab rectified himself by arguing the facts of case as opposed to expressing his feelings about Barre. He's 100% right.
Siad Barre destroyed Somalia for ever. Before he came there were no USC, no SSDF, no SNM, no SDM after him there were dozens of jabhads plus secession movements. Before him we had democracy with universal suffrage, habeas corpus, freedom of political association and expression, freedom to dissent, after him saw unprecented array of oppressive measures including but not limited to: arbitrary arrests, suspension habeas corpus, press gags, bans for political parties and all other opposition. Before him we had trust in our leaders and confidence in our political systems, after him we viewed our public institutions and government as our enemy or source to be cynically manipulated for personal/clan gain.
Unwashed fool who were sunglasses at night wrecked our economy (bankrupted the central bank and economy by the 80s), our education system (enrollment steadily falling during his tenure), ditto for our health system and made us one of the least developed nations on earth with abysmal developmental indexes. The UNDP called the 80s (along with the 90s) as Somalia's "lost generation" all thanks to Barre's policies. Every reputable 3rd party be it the UN and it's affiliates or other countries Siad and his policies are regarded as the focal culprits.
Siad Barre is the reason for our mess. Without him we wouldn't be here. Everything you see now is reaction to his policies as per Cause and Effect.
And that's how the cookie crumbles

Mr. Siyad Barre was a dictator and ruthless thug …but he did a lot of infrastructure in somalia on his long rain (sitting on the chair), which is normal given the fact he was the first of such ruler to rule Republic of Somalia, and given such long rain he has had, I believe any administration would have done the same or even better.
Anyways, here's a song/video about Africa’s past madman....Mr. Barre is included.
ENJOY the song!
