i never had to fill in my ethinicity in job applications, but if i had to, i would ofcourse do whats most advantagous to me,

i would put black, so i could take advantage of bieng the token black man,
even if i have better marks and better experience than the whites in the company,
i would do anything even use institutional racism to get me forward.


but i do not see myself as black.
if it benefits me that others see me as black, i wuld say thank you and continue to benefit from it.




but what you cant seem to get your head around the fact is that i am a somali,
it comes before all.

I think you know it goes alot deeper than that. The real reason why you'd put black wouldn't be to take advantage of an employment benefit for tha sake of filling quotas.

Psychologically, you and other somalis know y'all are in fact black people. Mentally you just don't want non-blacks to look at you in tha same vein as other races view African-Americans.

I've observed this trait not only wit somalis but with other Africans livin in America. Its like there's some stigma that goes along wit it.

In any case, I'll prove my point. Yes you are somali first and foremost but you even consider yourself black. How do i know this? See a few posts back in this thread you indicated that you were. You weren't benefitting from an employment offer so what made you say that you're black?

i relate to others of the same skin colour, but that is not my most important way of relating to other people.

while for a black american, the black identity is the most important.


ive lived in multicultural societies, and places where there were not that many blacks,
places that if you saw a black person accross the street, you would both cross and say hello to each other. maybe this is why i do not have problems relating to others on a "black" level.
I assume that i would be disassociating myselfs from other blacks if i lived in a city full of black people.
