The Eastern Alliance is constituted of four different groups: Eastern Habar Tol jelo, Warsangeli,
Dhulbahante (Mohamound Gerad) and Gaheyle (Sawaqroon-Majerten). "
"However, the Gaheyle participated in some of the peace talks that were taken on by non-Habar Yonis clans, most important was the Garadag peace forum. The proclaimed Eastern Alliance that amalgamated the rival Habar Tol jelo and the dispossessed Harti clans appears to have the
underlying objective of grouping against the dominant Habar Yonis."
And this is what happened when the H.J militia hijacked the suldan of ciidagales car & aid worker car! resulting in the H.J militia forcibly being attacked and fleeing erigavo.
"Habar Yoonis factions. During the war,
Habar Yoonis had harboured suspicions that the Habar Je’lo were sabotaging their efforts. One particular
incident which triggered distrust and animosity between the two clans is illustrative of this. Ismail Haji Nur
and Ahmed Mirreh, both of Habar Yoonis, travelled in 1990 to Gashaamo, where the SNM were meeting, to
request weapons for the war effort in Sanaag. On their way back to Erigavo, accompanied by Habar Yoonis
militia, were confronted by a Habar Je’lo militia who attempted to seize the weapons. The situation was
resolved without loss of life, but the level of trust between the two clans deteriorated (Nur, 2007).
Another incident occurred in April 1991, when two vehicles were on their way from Hargeisa to Erigavo to
assess needs and to deliver supplies. One car belonged to the Suldaan of the Iidagalle, a clan who, with the
Habar Yoonis, make up the Garhajis; the other belonged to an expatriate aid worker. The two vehicles were
hijacked by Burao-based Habar Je’lo militia near their base in Saraar. The militia then drove the vehicles
to Erigavo, causing unrest in the town and settled in a location in Erigavo called Berde (an old tree and a
local landmark). Habar Yoonis leaders asked that the cars be turned over to the SNM military in Erigavo.
When the militia refused,
the Habar Yoonis SNM attacked them, forcibly retrieving the vehicles, which were
then returned to the owners. This issue so affected relations with the local Habar Je’lo, that they decided
to relocate from Erigavo to towns like Yufle and Dayaxa, where many Erigavo Habar Je’lo had family ties
(Nur, 2007; Talaabo, 2007)."
Muse abokar trying to establish ties with the warsangeli in the hope of countering Eastern H.Y influence
"between Habar Je’lo and Warsangeli, they agreed that the Dhulbahante would invite the Warsangeli to a
joint gathering involving all three clans. By this time, the Habar Je’lo had fallen out with the Habar Yoonis
and withdrawn from Erigavo. They were aware that there had been talks between the Habar Yoonis and
the Warsangeli, and they were keen to expand their contact with the Warsangeli in the hope of countering
Habar Yoonis influence."
Eastern H.Y described as the victorious clan in sanaag.
"During the civil war, the Eastern Habar Yonis which retreated in it's strategic formations of northern sanaag, and
abandoned most of the open border pastoral areas the Isaq and the Harti clans traditionally resided in
together. The Harti clans occupied these vacated mixed grazing areas and Erigavo town. The defeat of
the Darod dominated military regime, in February 1991, reversed the process. The Harti clans
re-grouped in their stronghold areas, and abandoned the mixed border grazing zone,
which was taken
over by the victorious Eastern Habar Yonis."
Eastern Habar Yoonis described as establishing themselfs in the strongest military position in Sanaag.
"After the war the Habar Yoonis had become somewhat isolated from the other Sanaag clans. They had
established themselves in arguably the strongest military position in Sanaag, winning control of Erigavo, and
felt no need to engage with the others. However, by December 1992 and after the Garadag meeting, it was
clear that this isolation could lead to conflict with an alliance of Habar Je’lo, Dhulbahante and Warsangeli:
the Eastern Coalition."
The most important thing is what have this clans in the alliance had in common?
1. Gahayle they have been expelled to Bari - Puntland and no longer own any land in sanaag.
2.Warsangelis were severly Karbashed and some lands of theirs taken.
3.Dhulbahante was karbashed all the way to sool.
4.Habar jeclo was denied any importence in Erigavo district and were attacked forcibly when they hijacked the suldan of ciidagales car.
