I won't do that nor ever thought about it. if it is not genuine then there is no need for it. I always hold doors, say thank you...excuse ...ma'am sir to older..but it natural that I don't noticed it as something else... I only open doors when I drive grandmother and elder ladies.

I wouldn't open a door for a lady just to get the good side of her, that is old fashion thing to do BV.

Very little of courteous behaviour i.e. putting yourself second is really and truly natural. It's things society has taught us to do and how we are expected to behave for the sake of acceptance. Granted, pulling out chairs is very alien to us as Somalis and in some ways so is opening a car door but there was probably a time where holding mall doors open and eating from seperate plates with cutlery was also a foreign concept. We've evolved to adapt to our new environment and maybe this is just another step towards becoming, dare I say, more refined.

Inanta shaqo la'aan ba heyso..instead of putting some thought into a door being open...get to actually now the person and see where it goes.

So showing a bit of courtesy is a feminine trait now? Strange concept..

In my experience, it's actually the most refined men who hold doors open..and it doesn't harm their masculinity in anyway, it actually enriches it.

No one uses that term either ;)

Firefly I don't know what your getting on about, no one is talking about not holding doors, but more specifically taking a girl out and opening the car door. I can only see myself opening the car door if we are in a taxi or something and I get out first otherwise she better hold that door open for me

Surely only an insecure man would say such a thing but since I doubt that you are one of those men I would like to assume that you are capable of treating a woman like a lady. Romance and chivalry does not come naturally to Somali men but surely if you could go to uni and become a lawyer you could learn how to open car doors, buy flowers and be a gentleman to your lady.

I am not talking about trying to seduce some silly school girl but your lady surely you can't argue with that.

A car door is still a door, right? Besides, if you're taken her out, isn't even more necessary to treat her with courtesy? I dunno, maybe I'm just a bit oldfashioned, lol...

Meh, what is holding doors? I would expect a red carpet to be rolled under my feet so I would not have to touch the dirty ground with my shoes.

But all seriousness...

BlackVelvet you can't expect someone to do what they don't want. Somali men are missing the sensitive/emotional/caring chip. If a guy did this to you while you went out, I say call up a male relative and let them break his fingers (after Ramadan, of course). And why are you with a loser like that anyway? If a man doesn't pay you no mind and doesn't open the door, or treat you the way you should be treated, tell him all that talk is for the birds!
