The basic concept of people choosing their leaders or having representatives choose them is not alien to Islam and is in fact part and parcel of its history

yes shura is correct, but it is not the same as democracy, that requires a man-made constitution, elected representitives (instead of one amiir) etc.

So basically an oligarchy chooses an Amiir and if he's batshit insane, oh well!

Indeed. If we let Union have it benevolent securalist dictators like the Assad family and Hosni Mubarak would rule until time immemorial

Its either alShabaab/ Taliban/Iran or Assad for those who have little grasp of history beyond recent events. No middle grounds or no other alternatives....and when the facts prove otherwise twist the narrative to suit your own agenda
