The only thing that separated the SNM regime from the rest of the Somali regions was the relative peace they established in their corner of the Republic and the devotion to democratic ideals. Once this moral authority is eroded (restriction of the press, violence against civilians, denial of self-determination) you become another faction and lose whatever legitimacy you built in the eyes of the international community.
