To equate the problem of the Somali male in the diaspora to parenting style is short-sighted. There are many parents who micromanage the affairs of their children and produce some of the most smartest people in the country. A good example is the Asian style of parenting. They are the single most succesfull ethnic group in the U.S.
Another style of parenting (which seems to have a lot of liking) is typified by the well-to-do Caucasian middle income family that allows their children to "discover" their identity & potential knowing full well they have a number of safety nets in case they screw up. In addition, majority of the people they will ever interact with look like them, share their views, and thus reinforce expectations.
and so you will see a white male student who parties the first 2 years of college, gets a number of "Ds" on his transcript, sobers up the last 2 years, does an internship somehow and ends up being hired by a local construction firm.
The Somali family cannot afford their children to "discover" themselves only to produce more gangster's, irreligious children with no sense of purpose. This is the pitfall of simplifying a complex situation and not knowing the layers of confounding variables that ultimately affect the outcome. The well-to-do family that allow their children to enroll in colleges, move into dorms, due this with parents likely having been graduated from college (so the expectations are high) as the well as the kids relatives.
As Professor Talo has mentioned before, the reason why Somali females have out-performed their counterparts lies in how the somali family views the two sexes. One is held to such a standard that it's viewed as a barometer for the families level of respect & honor. Hence girls are kept more in doors, not allowed to leave as freely as the boys, therefore more time to do homework, focus on school work and not be influenced by waves of hip & hop tunes flooding the hood.
The gap between the guys & girls can be simplified to the above, in essence keeping the girls in doors has allowed them to mature enough to finish high school, graduate from college, and now in trouble of not finding a somali male with the same level of education.
So their you have it, i know i am gifted
p.s. it has not left my attention that the above hypothesis offer's a mechanism by which a solution can be found to the catastrophe that is the Somali male in the diaspora
