It has laid waste to the tribal chiefdoms of Sierra Leone, leaving hundreds dead, but the Ebola crisis began with just one healer's claims to special powers.

The outbreak need never have spread from Guinea, health officials revealed to AFP, except for a herbalist in the remote eastern border village of Sokoma.

"She was claiming to have powers to heal Ebola. Cases from Guinea were crossing into Sierra Leone for treatment," Mohamed Vandi, the top medical official in the hard-hit district of Kenema, told AFP.

"She got infected and died. During her funeral, women around the other towns got infected."

Ebola has killed more than 1,220 people since it emerged in southern Guinea at the start of the year, spreading first to Liberia and cutting a gruesome and gory swathe through eastern Sierra Leone since May https://uk.news.yahoo.com/sierra-leones ... ml#nuFdRsB.
A sadly fine example of the dangers of arrogance.

I want this to be true and for them to really make enough doses to at least be able to treat health workers, not because they're important than others, but the morale and work of health workers a key to all other actions. Staff fleeing, abandoning hospitals and treatment centers and refusing to engage with at risk populations is one of the key features in this epidemic.

If the can at first offer treatment to this most at risk group other results will follow. Really people are dying from abandonment who could be saved with supportive care, just no one left willing or able to feed and rehydrate them. Lack of teams of health educators to go out and inform the population also a major factor making the West African epidemic different and worse from the previous 3 in Uganda and DRC

I thought there was no vaccine available for this specific haemorrhagic ebola virus in Africa. I thought the issue here was not enough PPE supplied to staff at hospital to protect themselves from this deadly disease amongst other things.

This is NOT a vaccine, more along the lines of a serum, and it is only (along with some other treatments) in the earliest stages of approval. Not enough PPE (personal protective equipment), PPE not used correctly. It is of no use wearing gloves for example if you then touch your face with the infected gloves or don't change them..Not touching your face, not such an easy thing, people have bad habits like wiping away sweat (it is hot) or rubbing eyes (you could be tired).

So some more news, WHO/OMS will recommend whole bloood transfusions from survivors as a treatment method, The thing isthat, the whole blood should contain antibiodies that were effective in the case, rough and ready serum therapy, but there is now a large body of survivors so until those antibodies can be identified and replicated somehow, probably much much better than nothing i guess

Colonel wrote:And sent upon them were 25,000 bushmen, every single one affected by disease. So we said: "be patient, and wait all of you until the right moment".

They (Zoomalis) said: "the bushmen will make my tribe strong, surely we will be given advantage over the other clans?".

Have they no wisdom? Truly, it (Ebola) will struck all 4 tribes in the land, except those of understanding, and their numbers will be depleted. Hence they (the major tribes) will become 0.5.

But most amongst them do not comprehend.

Ebola treatment worked on monkeys

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/aug ... hire-mapp/

By Bradley J.

An experimental Ebola drug developed in San Diego protected all monkeys infected with the deadly virus in lab testing, according to a study published Friday in the journal Nature.

The research provides more promise that ZMapp, from Mapp Biopharmaceutical in Sorrento Mesa, could help human patients fight off the outbreak raging across much of West Africa.

In the study, 18 rhesus macaques were given ZMapp up to five days after infection. All of them survived.

“The level of improvement was utterly beyond my honest expectation,” said one of the study’s leaders, Gary Kobinger of the Public Health Agency of Canada in Winnipeg.

“For animal data, it’s extremely impressive,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which had a role in the work.

It’s unknown how well ZMapp — a combination of three antibodies — would work in people, where Ebola can take up to 21 days to show symptoms. That determination requires a clinical trial, which could begin late this year or in early 2015.
