A newly arrived 'Mali of the Zoo enquires about genital mutilation for her daughter.

"It is illegal, the doctor says. We do not circumcise girls in this country."




While leaving the hospital, the 'Malis of the Zoo are not disconcerted. "I heard there are Xalaaleysos who are flown to the West to perform the cut. It's easier, not to mention there is less risk to your honor. We don't want sharmuutos with wical children. I rather die than allow a daughter that wears jeans and makeup. I will ask five or six of my friends to share the expenses to fly out a Xalaaleyso. It's better get this done while they are babies, like the boys."
