I respect grant as a guest of the forum, hes old man...worked in afgooye, jilib and kismayo in the 70s lol
Sahal,
Thanks for the respect, but no. I was in Jilib for the school year 1967-68. I got to Kismayu occasionally, Afgoye once briefly.
The Somali Bantu and other minorities have been greatly abused in Somalia. Until recently and for the most part their story hasn't even been told.
Besides Kusow and Eno, there is now also Catherine Besteman"s Unraveling Somalia, Race, Violence and the Legacy of Slavery. Given the most recent population estimate just for the Gosha, Somalis will need to take note.
Gurey,
I have nothing against Somaliland other than the claims to the lands of the minority clans. If the Isaaq want a country of their own, inside their own lands, no problem. But that is essentially what the federal national organization amounts to. I am not so much against SL, as just of the opinion that their stance is silly. The Mormons once ruled all the way from Salt Lake City to San Diego, but that changed when the US Government arrived. Manifest Destiny and all. The population estimates are totally screwy, as you know, but the most recent offering from the UN says there may be as many Somali Bantu as there are Isaaq. Even if it turns out to be only half of that, you are still talking about a lot of people. I find that totally sobering. It's the treatment of the minorities that concerns me most, as the UN report on the Jubaland Assembly gives clear good reason.

Yalaxoow the only one that made sense in this whole thread
cause most of us born in 1990 and after. if we know our toolo we are lucky or admit we are somali.
how the hell one would know may may language?
Re: Maay is a language, not a dialect.
As yalaxoow has stated af maay has its own dialects so that means it is a language in its own right and there are many other languages In somalia such JIIDO, tuuni, booni, barawani, bajuuni, bantu languages Jareer, Gosha,Mushunguli Etc.....the list goes on embrace the diversity it could lead to peace in somalia

Re: Maay is a language, not a dialect.
af maay can be its own language. and also a dailect.. someone said look it chine. cantonease and mandarin are far away from eachother and people who speak dont understand eachother and both they are called be chines lahjado.. swedish and norwegian is almost one language . they understand almost 90% at time whit no problem and swedish and norwegian are called langueges and not lahjado-- marka af eelaay and standar af sooomaali can be tottaly 2 different languages at same time same languages whit 2 different lahjado--
Re: Maay is a language, not a dialect.
not me only most languistic experts have agreed that af maay is a language in its own rightkadarre wrote:Nah you just want it be another language.

Re: Maay is a language, not a dialect.
Most? The only pseudo linguist here is Mr Diireye.
Re: Maay is a language, not a dialect.
Somaliland and Somalia speak two different dialects of the somali language but af maay is completely different the vast majority of somalida do not understand it because it's own language
