Mike the somali language is the easiest language to learn, My white friends in sweden use to talk good somali.......all you have to do is be around somalis for a while, but i wouldnt suggest that....

Somali is a hard language, even Arabic, Chinese and Japanese is easier then Somali..for non-Afro-Asiatics

Thats really unfortunate wallahi. I came to the States when I was six right before the civil war started. I remember not meeting a Somali person in my schools until I got to my sophmore year in HS. Then I actually meet more to call friends in College and..my Somali came out of nowhere. I love my people but sometime, I feel like an outsider wallahi. Not a good feeling at all. I also remember no having a Mosque or a muslim cemetary...man MN did come a long way.

I'm pretty much a chameleon..........I am very comfortable among whites, blacks, foreigners, etc.

How do you do it? . Where we grow up we didnt get the weave until the turn of the millennium I met some cool people fresh off the boat and loved their stories. I get the "You need dhaqan celin" statement everywhere i go with my Somali friend. I'm glad though, I came a long way, since freshmen year of college.

granted my Somali is bad and it still is although it's improving. However, it's just about trying to absorb the atmosphere and I have always been around family and social functions.

We used to get a lot of videos/ruwaayads and had a lot of relatives, family friends around us

As far as being a chameleon, I had to learn how to make friends w/ ppl before there were a lot of Somalis around. I had to make friends w/ Americans, and because of my international background I could identify w/ Int'l ppl.

I also went to a Saudi school for a few years so that made me more comfortable w/ other cultues as well.

lool@ Maine. NO actually grow up in Austin,MN and moved to the Twin cities later. My parents always showed us the video and ruwayads growing up, hoping it will help connecting the cultures and the language. I always enjoyed them really.

I did grow up with relative aroud later myself but by the time they got to the states, it was like we were from two different worlds. Until today, actually, I best qualify as a non-somali to them They constantly mock my Somali, which encourages me try harder to learn it and perfect it someday inshallah.

We used to be send to relative in Dubai and Egypt to learn Arab and the Quran in the summers, so I might be struggling with culture but not the religion. It always opened my eyes to different cultures especially in Dubai. Wonderful place wallahi.

Gedo, Folks from Harar be they Somali, Harari, Oromo, or Arab considered themselves to be from Harar. She learned Somali at a later date when she moved to Las Canood. They considered people from the Hawd, Wuuqoyi, Konfuur and other predominately SOmali areas as Somali.
