Bajunis are actually very warm and friendly people. They're all Muslims, laakiin waa iska Sufis who practice a lot of bid'ah. They live along the coast from Baraawe down to Malindi & some island called Kilwa that is today abandoned. They do practice sixir, its true, but they are hospitable people who have no hatred towards Somalis. I've been to Lamu in the past and loved it. Its nothing like Mombasa, because Mombasa has way too many sanka dhuudhis and tourists.

Lamu is a small fishing town, forgotten by time. I encourage you to visit it, inshallah. Coastal people are generally more civilized than nomads. Beautiful architecture, wonderful food, everyone is a Muslim, Eid feasts last 3 days too. So much like Marka & Baraawe.

Sounds awsome, how far is it from the Soomali border?

Btw How were the beaches of Marka as a kid? From the pictures i see of that place its my favorite place in Somalia. Did You Guys own a home there?

I saw a Dhikr on campus last week at an interfaith event... a friend of mine apparently became Sufi and he co-organized the event... so me and another dude went but like there was no other Muslim students... they got scared by the word Sufi

but all they really was saying was the shahada, sura ikhlas, fatiha, the names of allah and stuff like that

Its not far from the Somali border. There are other less known towns/villages in that area too. Its closer to Kismayo than Kismayo is to Xamar. Kismayo is 500+ kilometers from Xamar, Lamu is probably around 400 kilometers. Not 100% sure though.

Marka was wonderful. We used to spend all day, everyday at the beach. Its a little warmer than Xamar, but its people were 10 times better because they weren't regular Somalis. The people were very peaceful, the kids weren't as violent like Xamar, every morning the neighbors would make qaxwo and drink it together, there was even a church and a missionary school and nobody ever bothered them. Cad cadka never pick a fight with anyone. Believe it or not, Hawiye & Daarood families were very few gacma ku tiris. There was 1 abgaal dude in the whole place known as Cumar Abgaloow, lool.

What I remember the most is the food, so many varities. Fish was a major thing, you could even find fish oodkac, most of the maids were men too, almost every family had a male shaqaalo. Even after the civil war started, Marka had electricity and water, taxes were still being collected. When word reached that MSB left Xamar, all Daarood families left, electricity was still on.

You raise a valid point but I look at coastal Kenya as Muslim land because they were once part of the Great Swahili empire that was later occupied and then forced to join the non-Muslim Bantus. Coastal Kenya has nothing in common with the rest of Kenya. It feels like you're in Marka or Baraawe. Plus, Lamu has a bit more autonomy than Mombasa, its very rural and Swahili.

Wow are the people predominantly Muslim? I love Coastal living. Definintely a thought. Any Soomalis living there? I think You mentioned Bajuuns and the only thing that comes to My mind is something My Uncle who came from Kista to the States recently told Me, that while He was in Kista He wanted to go to the Bajuun islands so many times but was scared because the Bajuuns are known to do some crazy sixir on foreigners
THe coast is a WAY different country than the rest of Kenya. You would think you are in Muqdisho or Middle East or something. But maxay kuugu taale, the place sixir iyo qurun iyo qashin dhan baa dilay. Baantuuda la dhaama

Fah,

Dhikri was part of everyday life growing up. Ask Cawar. All dugsi/madrassah kids attended a dhikri session atleast once a week, specially Thursday evenings right after Maghdrib. They would serve bun & cambuulo. Sometimes we would go to Biyooleey for siyaaro to visit the tomb of Sh Aweys and stay 2-3 days camped out there. Before the "Ikhwaan" revivalism movement of the late 80s, Somalia was a major Sufi spot. They ran the whole country.

Mushunguliga in Gosha also practiced sixir a lot, so were Gelediga af-gooye years ago. Sixir served as a powerful arsenel in wars, warriors were required to master it. Faalka was also highly practiced in Somalia, some clans like Xawaadlaha still practice forune-telling. ikhwaans sure changed a lot. We came a long way, but also went back, weird.

Waligaa wa-shamsi ma laguugu qaaday? That thing was a riot. Subcis was a weekly thing, ka soo baxida & washing looxa was a daily thing. And making the ink using milk and charcoal? And picking a fight with kabiirka? Life was good.

Wa Shamsi was no fun man...our macallin was so xaasid he used to beat us with fiilyonka electerika ah..but he never used it on me..
He feared in la xiro haduu marks ii sameeyo..lol, lakin qanjaruufo uu baababh iiga dhigi jiray mF-ka during subciska hadaan wax khlado.. as I used to wear shorts..

But over all life was beautiful si kastoo loo eegaba wallah.. fun, no worries of children being kidnapped , let alone being abused sexually iyo dhaqan xumada iyo cabsida meelahan yala.
