U r speaking in terms of useless somali dialect and i speaking of the culture of Somaliniimo. Xishood and dhaqaan pride is KAPUT. Last night me and my galfriends came from a very quite and decent dinner outing, at a very trendy restaurant when we came upon a group of somali girls and boys drunk and laughing loud having a good time. They were at least 7 of them, two boys looked capitally qaniiis. They girls were slutty and drunk, and they didnt even fear us or be ashamed of us, hijaabed but modern muslimaas. I gave them a nasty look as if they were my inaa adeers--which very bizarre, later i came to reflect upon. Oh Somalis, Oh Somalia--How wronged thau have been, i cry for you, i curse Baare for you!

   thats exactly what I'm talking about! The somali dhaqan isn't just a language, it's a lifestyle. full of xishowd, and a hierarchy of respect, an entire cuisine and way of interacting.

Full of xishood and hypocrisy. "I am better than you, so be shy and show respect toward me."

green, take your assumptions elsewhere.

I want to know something.

Do you feel that the responsibility knowing one's cultural identity and heritage lies on the child to go out and learn it, or does it fall on the parent who has to sit them down and teach it?

Falls on both. Thats like the doctor who doesn't know how to practice medicine. Was it his responsibility to learn his trade or solely the responsibility of his accrediting institution?

I will try to answer your question as best as I can. Somali dhaqan to me is based on the lives of somalis before the world was connected by fast transportation and the easy accessibility of the media. That means a big part of out culture is poetry because people would speak somali to each other in a poetic sort of way. When I go back and read the poems of ugaas nuur I am amazed to see the diplomatic level he was thinking on. Truly a man ahead of his time. Also when you listen to the stories of cigaal shidaad you see that somali people made fun of people that were scared of stuff but then again understood that those people who were scared were also more cautious and would live longer lives. Our culture can not be tied down to artifacts and clothing (even though we do have many original artifacts and clothing). Somalia has the largest number of camels anywhere in the world and the second is ethiopia (the somali galbeed region). Somalis who breed these animals are known to be tough and stubborn just like camels. Somalis who grow crop are know to be more patient. I might be going a little of topic but I am trying to basically say our culture is so vast there would be no possible way to describe it in a short period of time.

Growing up in the west myself I understand you completely. If you see a muslim pray 5 times a day here it is mashallah. Deen is the number one priority. I dont want to look too stupid but this :som: this :sland: this :dj: and whatever other meaning less flag that revovles around polotics is meaningless. However this is very important  . And this  of mine feels complete when I learned about my culture. I have spent a great part of my life playing basketball with african americans. They used to always joke around saying haha go back to your village but when we would talk one on one some would say "man I sure wish I knew where my ancestors where from". When I look at them I see a lost people who have lost their culture in the last 200 plus years.

I felt luckily that I knew where my ancestors (or my parents) were from but felt sad that I knew very little about them. Most of what I know about them is from reading poetry and stories online and also asking family members "how was it back then". Knowing all of this I believe really changed my life for the better. Many people will insult somali culture because of the bad stuff that they witnessed all the while they have no idea of its wonders. All people are not the same and maybe it's not something you would be interested in. All the same learning a language is not a bad thing and especially one that was spoken so eloquently by your ancestors.

mcali,

Thanks for the response. It was a nice read. I also felt the same when learning about heritage and culture, when comparing myself to many peers of mine. I also feel as you do about current politics. But as I've pointed out, what I used to feel about culture is no longer there, for reasons mentioned. And no where did I say that learning the language is a bad thing. I wish I knew how to speak it. It doesn't even have to be fluent. In the end, the world is a lot smaller and history is a lot bleaker than as we make it out to be.
