Anyway, back to the topic. Siyaad Barre was a your typical African dictator. He had good intentions at the start to stamp out corruption that existed in the previous Somali government and he did. He supervised the project of teaching how to read the and write the Somali language to the masses.

But as with all dictators, the power got to his head. First, he ordered the executions of Shaykhs who disagreed with his socialist views. Then he started a war with Ethiopia to win the hearts and minds of Somalis, his real intention however was to purge the military of any opponents that might do a coup. After losing the war, he started to use tribalism as a way to control the country while annihilating any political opposition with his secret police which was known as the 'black ss'

Somalis began to be disaffected with his rule especially those from the Northern regions. There was a huge inequality in terms of infrastructure and services in the Northern regions which were neglected. Refugees' from the Ogaden were given more power and aid in places like Hargeisa, this only added to the disaffection of locals towards the government. Students who protested were mowed down with machine guns and would be dragged out of their homes by police before being tortured and executed.

My own family members tell me during the 80's they weren't allowed to build a house with more than 2 floors. The injustice that was taking place was unbearable leading to the formation of a rebel movement, the SNM. Soldiers began to desert the military to join this rebel movement because of the sheer oppression taking place in their home regions.

Siyaad Barre responded with brute force. Innocent civilians were rounded up and chained together before being killed. Hundreds of people would disappear on a weekly basis. Students as young as 12 were arrested before being bled to death for blood to go to injured soldiers. This injustices and brutalities led to the downfall of Siyaad Barre who eventually died in a Nigerian toilet.

First let me say the SNM was a part and parcel of the Kacaanka..One of them was the top five..and even Adeer Siilaanyo was a minister of the kacaan to the last minute. Whatever mistakes/wrongdoings of the kacaan was not only the doing of Siyaad Barre and Daaroods.. Get the facts straight.
