Globetrotter,

You keep hurling insults at the Shari'ah courts in Mogadishu, but you barely stick around to find out details about their actions. They did not confiscate Hindi movies as you claim, those cinemas that were raided were known to have a habit of consistently showing pornogrophy to the public including young children. Do you honestly think the courts would randomly select these cinemas out of the countless other cinemas? Why these particular ones?

Even Western society knows vice when it sees one, that is why adult material including pornogrophy is made inaccesible to minors.

The courts have their flaws, but they provide much relieve to a city besieged with anarchy and vice. Do you have any idea how much they do for their communities? How many rapists they have put away, how many murderers they have prosecuted? This is the problem with Somalis, it is easier to critisise then to think logically and calmly. What other alternative do Mogadishu residents have? No police, no civil society, no clan government, nothing, desparate times call for desparate measures.

Don't you think that it is a travesty to call them Sharia courts, when they solely deal with the desperate and downtrodden poor people, and not the militias and the warlords who caused the public's suffering in the first place? I saw it first hand, and I won't label them Sharia Courts.

I agree the courts do function in questionable manners at times, let's not forget that they are not all the same. Certainly some have been known to have biased tendencies and operate on the rules of clan politics, but many others are not like that. They do stay away from the major warlords for their own safety, they do not want such confrontations, because they fear they might be destroyed.

My argument is this: there is no other form of law enforcement in Somalia, the courts are the only ones that provide some sort of relieve. We should let them do their business, not bad-mouth them as we have a habit of doing, for all we know they could be on the right path? Allahu-Aclam!
