Western Europeans are the most savage and brutal people in human existence, baring the Mongols.

Now Europe was lucky because all the essential variables fell into place are the right time and place.
1. Fertile land with a large capacity for supporting population
2. Fractured politics avoiding continent wide empires forming
Now add to this essential mix, slightly higher frequency of wars for 200 years than Asian Empires and states plus another 300-400 of non stop warfare , while the much Larger richer and sophisticated cultures like China, India had decades of peace and prosperity, resting on their laurels.
The Europeans barley survived wrecking their civilization through non-stop warfare and when they came close during the 30 year war, by that time they completed a revolution in military affairs.
By the time Europeans met Indians in battle they were still slightly behind in technology ( Indian muskets and cannons were much better) it didnt matter because their mastery of the art of war was so much better..
Thus this brutish, savage people that were ravenously looking at the riches in front of them were unleashed on the world.
A 100 years later after gorging themselvs feasting on the wealth of the lesser wolves , they attempted to clean up and acquire the trappings of high culture .
Not very successfull in my opinion because while they caught up and started to exceed the rest of the world in technology by the 1700's they still lagged behind in 2 areas due to their savage beginnings.
It wasnt untill the early 19th century when European doctors ceased to be a bigger threat to you than any ailment.
and finally it was personal hygiene , due to prejudices from the church they viewed bathing and excessive washing as suspect, because the Romans were obsessed with it and Muslims.
In Spain bathing frequently and not stinking would make you a muslim or jew pretending to be a christian.
Smelling better than your nieghbours could get the spanish inquisition torturing you till you confess to being a muslim or a jew.
When they reached Asia in the 1500's this was confirmed to them because they saw muslim and hindu indians bathing regularly , Thais, javanese, malays, japanese and Chinese , cleanliness must definitely be a pagan practice.
for a long time is was said you could smell a european before you see him, and you might think i am exaggerating but it was around victorian age right after the napoleonic wars that personal hygiene got some traction, and in some backwards parts of Europe like poland and southern italy up till the first world war.
