The European Union (EU) and its partners refunded Kenya Sh4.3 billion for its troops fighting Al-Shabaab militia in Somalia in the fiscal year ended June 2019, latest Exchequer statistics show.

Cash from African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) in the 12-month period was nearly half the Sh8.5 billion the Treasury had budgeted for.

The 28-nation EU, the largest contributor of funds to the Amisom through the African Peace Facility, in April pledged to continue supporting the AU mission’s programmes and activities in financial year 2019/20.

The EU funds cater for allowances for the Amisom troops and police, international and local civilian staff salaries, operational costs of their offices, among others.

The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), on the other hand, provides logistical field support to the Amisom troops and Somali National Security Forces during joint operations.

The United Nations has, however, been facing a record cash crunch, which its boss Antonio Guterres warned at the beginning of the fiscal year in July 2018 would affect the delivery of its mandate if not expeditiously addressed. The Federal Government of Somalia is, together with partners implementing the Somalia Transition Plan, backed by the UN Security Council and the African Union, aimed at transferring security responsibility to Somali National Security Forces ahead of Amisom’s planned exit in 2021.

Kenya had signalled gradual withdrawal of her troops from the war-torn nation after it slashed the estimates of reimbursement from the Amisom for the year ending June 2020 by 41.17 per cent, compared with estimates for a year earlier.

The Treasury expects refunds of Sh5 billion this financial year in the year starting July, the least amount in the past five years, cash inflows which will fall further in subsequent year.

About 4,000 Kenyan soldiers are part of the Amisom, presently headed by Ethiopia’s Lt Gen Tigabu Yilma Wondimhunegn. Conservative estimates shows the international community pays $1,028 (Sh106,706) for each soldier per month. Their respective governments then deduct about $200 (Sh20, 760) for administrative costs.

You are right sxb. Originally my father's family IS from Shilaabo (my grandfather on dad's side was actually born in Khelaafo; my mom's family is from Wardheer and Galaadi). When my dad was a student in Xamar, he would go and visit my grandfather (his dad) and his uncles all in Shiilaabo area all the way down to Beledweyne and in between visiting his uncles in Qalqalooc, Ulasan, Baarmagoog, Laba Baar, etc.

You know where those uncles ended up? Jubbaland baby! My grandfather traded the dry desert between Shiilaabo to Dhuusamareeb for the Jubba River. He died in Beled-Xaawo (AUN).

If many Marehan no longer live there, waa Alxamdulilah. Cayr and Habar Gidir can keep the scraps we left behind. Recently my mom's family moved some distressed relatives (because of the drought) from Yamaarugley in Galaadi area living next to
MJ/reer Bicidyahan and shipped them to Beerxaani in Lower Jubba. They bought some cows for them from Marehan/Talxe neighbors since having cattle is important in the area. I laughed when they talked about meeting Gaaljecel for the first time. "War waxay yiraahdeen Doqondiid baanu nahay. Ka hor ma maqal!"

For 150 years, Marehan has been settling the Jubba Valley and I even forsee ALL of Marehan completely ending up in Jubbaland at some point especially with climate change as the areas above become more drought prone and dry.

The one Marehan clan that was the most resistant to migration has always been reer Dalal (Farmaajo is reer Dalal). Even among reer Diini, when my reer Siyaad was founding and settling in Garbahaaray and reer Ugaas Shermaake was taking over Baardheere, reer Dalal never wanted to budge.

Today every reer Dalal I see talks about nothing but building a house in Kismaayo. Even reer Dalal who never wanted to move anywhere south of Caabudwaaq build or buy land only in Kismaayo. Reer Dalal have bought so much land in Kismaayo and Lower Jubba, they probably own 1/3 of the farmland between Kismaayo and Jilib.

So yes, that's Marehan and why Kismaayo and Jubbaland will never be separated from us. Either you accept that and we build two houses instead of fighting over one, or we be in perpetual state of crisis which you will surely lose
This is so stupid, we can not lose all of that land this is where we historically resided! We should stop marexans from moving too much to gedo wallahi because I worry for the remaining ones, eve the most Northern marexans are now moving in the masses, we should stay in our tuulos and try to build and develop them like neighboring clans. Marexan has lost too much land! Now we are ganna go to al shabab neighbored gedo? And you know the problems of Juba. This migration thing has made many problems arise for us.
