I can't believe I am agreeing with you but your right concerning Shaikh Sharif. The prophet use to negotiate with the kuffar of Quraish and also different groups. The main reason to negotiate is to by time and to protect the lives and security of the muslims. On the other hand if you have the upper hand then there is no sense in negotiate with the enemy. In that situation the enemy either submits or faces war. If you look at the Somalia's situation, the muslims there are weak and divided. So to have a mentality of no negotiation or no comprise then this is ignorance. The prophet made a ten year treaty with the kuffar of Quraish in which any muslim that fled Makkah to Medinah would have to be sent back and Vise Versa. This treaty with Quraish angered many of the companions such Umar. So the muslims must have a realistic strategery that can bring peace and also protect the lives and property of the muslims in living Somalia.

He could have saved himself two things.
When He saw that most members in the ICU were hardcore he shold have honarably stepped down, the Americans would have left him so would the ICU.
So the notion that he feared for his life does not have weight.
