Somaliland is 3.5 million, this is from a UNDP source in june 2010 when the election took place

"The population of Somaliland on January 1st 2010 is approximately 3,508,445. (Extrapolated from Somalia populations of 8,699,000 on January 26th 2009, 00:00:00 and 9,118,773 on October 9th 2010, and a Somaliland population of 3,500,000 on November 7th 2009.)"

1-7 years time we gonna hit the 4 million mark 8-)

By Somaliland I mean the areas actually controlled by Somaliland (i.e. the Dir areas mostly).

No more than 2 to 2.5 million

Population-wise the south is much larger than the north. It is like US east coast vs west coast. Driving through Somaliland and Puntland is like going through Montana and N. Dakota.
wrong comparison, Bari, nugaal, sanaag and sool are sparsley populated and have always been sparsely populated.

You need to go towards the west between caynabo and borame.... this is heavily populated.

According to the 1975 census, Toghdeer population nearly equaled Bari, Nugaal, Mudug and sool.
and toghdeer is smaller than Woqoyi galbeed which had a greater population that Bari, Mudug, Galguduud, Nugaal combined.

this is 1975.........

Burco is being underestimated big time! We were 90,000 in 1991.

Now we are for sure between 250,000 and 400,000

if the whole population of Djibouti including Issa, Afar and Samaroon don't even reach a million, why do you think Somaliland is any different?
and not only do you reject a million but even 2 million.

There has never been a proper census of Somalia. There was ONE flawed census conducted in February 1975, 36 years ago. That census listed the population of Somalia at 3,253,024.

There was supposed to be another census in 1986 but the civil war had already started by then, and the figures are too dubious to be taken seriously.

All population statistics in Somalia since then are somewhere between an educated guess and complete fantasy.

With a 4% growth rate per year (fast growing African countries like Kenya have a 4%/year growth rate) the population of Somalia today should be about 10,972,883.

Somalia isn't like Kenya though, there is violence and refugees and war. Somalia's growth rate is probably more like Sudan's with 3% per year growth rate, putting the population at 9,428,168.

Which would mean that the civil war has killed and displaced as refugees about 1.5 million people over the last 20 years.

This is the same as other estimates though, taking a statistic over 30 years old and extrapolating.

Djibouti is a city State, Somaliland is several times the size and has countless more cities, towns and villages as well as the nomadic population. You can't seriously be comparing Djibouti to Somaliland

Djibouti = Djibouti City

Somaliland = Hargeisa, Boorama, Gabiley, Arabsiyo, Oodweyne, Burao, Erigavo, Caynaba, Las Anod + countless towns as well as villages + Nomads estimated at 55% of the population.

War Juzmee adigana naga dhaaf dee saxiibo, if the population is a huge as you claim then how come less than 600.000k voted? it`s common sense that only 1/3 of people vote, lets just for the sake of it say that only 1/4 voted in Somaliland, that would put the whole population on 2 million.
