My ethnicity is really Belew but these days, the Belew ethnicity only exists in imagination and history books. We have assimilated to becoming Tigre people. We speak Tigre (a semitic language not to be confused for Tigrinya).
85% of Eritreans belong to the Biher-Tigrinya ethnic group and Tigre ethnic group.
There are officially 9 main ethnic groups in Eritrea but in reality, that number is closer to 15. (Biher-Tigrinya, Tigre, Saho, Hidareb, Afar, Kunama, Rashaida, Blin, Nara, Dahlik, Adeni-Arabs, etc. etc.)
Eritrea's population is roughly 6 million
The country is around 50/50 between Muslims and Christians
For simplicity, I will only post quick facts about the 4 largest ethnic groups of Eritrea.
Ethnic Name: Biher-Tigrinya
Size: 50% of the population
Language: Tigrinya (Eritrean Dialect)
Religion: Mostly Christian
Ethnic Name: Tigre
Size: 35% of Eritrea's population
Language: Tigre
Religion: Mostly Muslim
Ethnic Name: Saho
Size: 5% of the population
Language: Saho
Religion: Nearly all Muslims
Ethnic Name: Hidareb
Size: 3% of the population
Language: Beja (Hidareb; To-Badawi)
Religion: Islam
This Eritrean dude is real funny. Belew is a tribe that has roots in Ethiopia (Agew or Agau). Actually, the Belew or the Bilen Tribe in Eritrea are recent migrants to Eritrea from Central and Northern Ethiopia. When the Amharas took power in Ethiopia in the 12th century from Agews, many of the Agews scattered in all directions. the one that went to Eritrea is Belen (Belew etc). They are cushitic by origin. Too bad he doesn't know his real root. And also the Tigrigna group of Eritrea is a recent fabrication and there never existed a tribe by that name. they are a slight variation of Tigray. their only difference is being colonized by Turkey, Italy and British. It is just a phsycological difference from Ethiopia (Tigray) with litte additional benefit of infrastructure built in their capital Asmara by Italians during their 50 years of occupation. Mind you, The Tigrigna in Eritrea were not allowed to go to school more than 4th grade and normally they were labourours to the 500k or more Italians who were preparing to Invade Ethiopia for 40 years. But, with the departure of Italians in the 1940s created a favourable condition for them to look down on Their brothers in Tigray who were on the look for modern life in Asmara. Hence the deregatory name "Agame" come to the scene.
Belew the Eritrean dude tried his best by posting Models of his country and poverty striken Ethiopians to compare and contrast. Most of these people are in denail of their true origin and live in the fantasy world. the Tigrina in Eritrea has the same root as the Tigray and Amhara in Ethiopia. They are all a mix of existing cushic Agaw and Yemenite groups who migrated 2000 years ago. All the names in Eritrea and North Ethiopia have Agew (cushic names) as such we are all related to other cushit groups of the horn such as somalis, oromos, afars and bejas the only difference being some admixture of the habeshat from yemen.
