Re: Our endangered names
Alpha, it's names came out later in islamic/muslim history so sahabah or tabi'een didnt have opinion of it. but ibn al arabi reasoning that is one oof the names of Allah that " we: dont know meaning so we cannot name it. also ibn malik says :the same is one of the name of Allah such 3alim, qadir etc so not permissible. ibn 3abas said: means al insan in habasha language! Allahu a3lam.
so there is no nas saree7 about it. if you feel not right, then be it but every one goes by their opinion, nothink from sunnah says haram or not.

Re: Our endangered names
hyper,
I've read that what is important is the meaning of a name. So long as its meaning doesn't conflict with Islam, it should be considered permissible. Now if a meaning is unknown, how could the name be permissible? That's just how I've concluded it. If I'm wrong, I'll reconsider my opinion. But what you've said only supports my view.

Re: Our endangered names
well, Allah only knows, there is aqwaal but it's just opinions. if you want name it just cause mentioned in the quran and you know only Allah who knows it. you can name it as long is not bad name, like jahanama, sa3eer..etc.lol
in yasin, Allah using it as to swear "le ta'akod and importance" cause nest word is " wal qur'aan" so that should give us hint is a great meaning that Allah kept the meaning for himself.
the only name i would name outside asma'a Allah is Ali and hassan. that is my preference,
im not supporting your opinion, im just saying very later in islamic history came out those names. only one qool from ibn 3abaas saying : means al insaan in habashi language.

Re: Our endangered names
I think what is kind of unique to Somalis is the use of descriptors in individual names instead of their real 'surname', which then goes on to the nuclear family's name for example: reer Abdi Dheere. (Dheere being Tall). I quite like this system. Only problem being, having to remember both their actual 'surname' alongside the nick.

Re: Our endangered names
sarax, when we were exposed to other cultures, some became creative and they took their father/grandpa's nick name as suname.
for instant now our surname is : alsuufi
that is my granpa's nick name. so me is abdulrauf alsuufi
for instant now our surname is : alsuufi

Nicknames are pretty cool.
Re: Our endangered names
My Abritis only has Somali-specific names in the last 8 generations. No Arab names in sight.. maybe just a coincidence.

Re: Our endangered names
Be proud of your culture, language and embrace distinct somali names.
That was the message of this thread but apparently some of you people have been brainswashed into a self-identity hate. You cannot differentiate between what is islam and what is arab!
