BOSSASO, Somalia May 9 (Garowe Online) - Two international aid workers were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday in the northern Somali region of Puntland, authorities said.

Puntland Interior Minister Ahmed Abdi Habsade confirmed to local press that two employees – one Kenyan, one Briton – with Care International were kidnapped while providing humanitarian work in Iskushuban district, 150km south of Puntland's commercial town, Bossaso.

Minister Habsade said there were ongoing efforts to release the kidnapped workers and bring the “criminals” to justice.

Police sources said they were pursuing the kidnappers, but admitted they lacked proper equipment and manpower to search the vast, scarcely inhabited territory where the aid workers were kidnapped.

Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland administration was established in 1998 to return order to northeastern regions. Since then, the region has been renowned for its relative peace and stability.
