DUBAI, UAE May 5 2007 - Somalia’s semiautonomous Puntland region inked a controversial livestock export deal with Arab companies during a Friday night ceremony at a Dubai hotel, reliable sources in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said.
Puntland President Mohamud “Adde” Muse attended the ceremony alongside officials representing the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (UAE) and Saudi Arabian company, Al-Jabberi.

Confidential sources at the invite-only ceremony said representatives from Ras Al Khaimah and Al-Jabberi Company signed the deal, while President Muse played an “observer” role.

Some of the tenets of the agreement have opened up a heated debate in Puntland, where the business community is challenging the administration’s policy.

The livestock export deal, reached last month between Puntland and Al-Jabberi, effectively gives the latter company exclusive rights to export Puntland livestock to the Middle East for the next 15 years.

How can Puntland exporters really accept this ?
Why sell a camel to the arabs for 150 USD in Bosaaso and let them profit huge on it when the ship arrives in UAE for maybe the triple price .

This is really bad people I feel sorry for this illegal monopoly stated by Puntland goverments. Everybody knows somalis are fully capable of renting or buying freight ships self and ship away the live stock to get a higher price for themself .

Also latest news two aidworkers from Care have been kidnapped in Puntland.

And what is emerging is surely several hundred million dollars business .

The first shipment was sent off from Berbera yesterday , a milestone .
And Berbera = 100 - 130 million dollar business yearly of livestock export.
Thats good for a little country wich really needed this.

However Puntland exporters seems to have been scammed by their goverment.
How can you accept a monopoly by some arabs on your livestock.
How can you accept not being allowed to rent a ship by yourself and ship out the livestock of yours .
