Red-haired family victims of thugs

A family say they had been forced out of three homes by thugs because they have red hair.

Kevin and Barbara Chapman say they and their four children have endured three years of attacks and abuse. The family, who all have red hair, have already moved home twice, but say wherever they go they are subjected to taunts, violence and graffiti.

In the latest incident at their third property in different parts of Newcastle upon Tyne, they came home to find abuse painted on their property. Even as they discussed another move with social workers last week, they returned to find their windows were smashed.

Son Kevin, 11, became so depressed he attempted suicide and is now taught at home. Only last week he was repeatedly punched by a girl in the street.

Mr Chapman, 49, said his 10-year-old daughter Ryelle and sons Daniel, 10 and Jordan, 13, had also been badly affected. Each time the family move the hate mob reappears, he says.

He told reporters: "The abuse we get is unbelievable. It started more than three years ago, when the kids started getting bullied by lads over the colour of their hair.

"They've been punched and kicked and thrown over a hedge. Every time they go out these gangs get to them.

"We can't even go to the local shops which are only two minutes away. The kids get all their stuff taken off them."

The family moved from Walker to Newbiggin Hall to try to escape the bullying, but a year ago they were forced to move once again to Kenton Bar. Now, they say the hate mob has once again forced them to look for a new home.

Mr Chapman said: "There seem to be around 10 or 12 families who have relations in the different areas we have been. Word seems to get around and it starts again."
