Making money at Your Own Wedding: $10,000
I went to yet another wedding this past weekend that stunned me.
It was the wedding of some latino neighbors of mine. There were about 200 people who showed up. The music was good and so was the food.
There was some fundraising for the newly married couple. The guests brought cards containing money and there was also another fundraiser, paying to dance with the groom or bride.
So all in all, nearly $8,000 was raised just from the money tree (envelopes with cash) and dances with the couple along with I estimate $2,000 in the cash envelopes.
I was stunned at the contrast with Somali weddings which are financially devastating to the couple.

Re: Making money at Your Own Wedding: $10,000
many somali weddings these days are useless and overexpensive. guy goes to alaska fishing for 6 months to save up and once he get's back, throws a lavish $25,000 dollar aroos, few weeks/months later, they get divorced. This problem is becoming normal trend around here.
now abdiwahab, you brough some interesting point, not only finanacial but also changing the ways of somali weddings, doing something new, for god sakes, has there ever been one on daylight instead of the current deja vu nights?

Advo,
I agree with you about having a daylight event. Somali receptions nowdays resemble nite clubs instead of a wedding.
Somali weddings are dry too because of the lack of participation from the couple and guests. The wedding I went had friends of the groom and bride talk and make funny jokes. The parents and siblings also spoke.
In Somali weddings, the couple just sit there and look as if they were facing an execution squad.

As a matter of fact it is only Somalis that don't contribute to weddings...They don't only contribute but they ruin the weddings:
1. They come extermely late..
2. They waste the food.
3. They gossip horribly.
4. Young people (Boys) in some areas fight.
5. Qaar baa is hurrufa haweenka(Mostly reer waqooyiga).oo isu khaakhaayira.
6. They don't respect the dance floor.
7.They never ever bring peresnts to the newly wed...
Acuudka...
Dhwor aroos oo aan tegey oo shaqadayda ah, wax lacag iyo hadiyada la siiyey waad yaabtaa...

Re: Making money at Your Own Wedding: $10,000
I hate it sxb........the whole thing.
The doors are opened about 8-9 pm.
There'a always two ajabi useless security guards.
More people arrive........islaamo with their kids and dhoocila with attitudes
all the middle aged gurls are wearing atleast 2 pounds of make up minus the fake extentions.
Somali "thugs" arrive drunk at the parking lot and start harrassing any gabdho that avoids them.
music starts.........very loud, the lighting are too bright and the singer is singing same old shit that that everybody knows the lyrics.
You cant holla at the beezies cus there cousin or mom is eye-balling them at all times.
The bride and groom arrive.........WALKING ZOOMBIES.......side to side and sh!t
etc..........cottttttdaaaamit we need to diversify our bonds and option, let's do something exciting and new.

Advo,
My ideal aroos which inshallah I will have sometime in the next year or two would have the following program:
Wedding Singer - My Cousin who will sing the Somali songs for free to satisfy the hardcore Somali music fans
Photographer - My other cousin who is an excellent photographer who is gonna do it for free
DJ services - Another friend of mine who works the clubs in my city.
Ushers - I got my family to do that.
Security - 4 Big Beefy Madow Brothers I know from around the way to deal with the riff raff that will make those fake 'gangstas' flee when they realize these brothers are the real deal.
Arranged Seating - Everyone knows where they will be seated.
Schedule of Programs:
Cocktails for Guests
Welcome Speech to be presented by me & wifey.
Open Mic - My homeboyz, home girls and friends have the opportunity to talk.
Dancing - A well coordinated preselected Somali and english songs.
Kambuli,
Yep, Somali folks can be a pain. They bringing nothing yet cost the couple so much.

For me, paying $200 to the shiekh at the masjid should be enough. The idea of paying thousands of dollars for few hours does not entertain me a bit.
