Puntland Commission wins 2007 Good Governance Award for Africa.

Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon presented the 2007 Good Governance Award to Said Farah Mohamoud, the Chairman of the Puntland Good Governance Commission, for the outstanding job they contributed to Puntland good governance initiatives in the public sector category for Africa. The award was given by the House of Lords of the United Kingdom Parliament, on 17 July 2007.


The Commission won this award following a research the commission made to assist the Puntland Government undertakes a drastic reform in its institutions. The President of Puntland, H.E. Mohamoud Muse Hersi decided to appoint an independent Commission, constituting experienced professional in the fields of law, economics, public administration and social services. the major Terms of Reference of the Commission was to recommend the government implement good government measures that encourage economic recovery, institutional efficiency, accountability and transparency.



The reform program has been officially launched on Saturday, 22nd April 2006, in Garowe. The President of Puntland, H.E. Mohamoud Muse Hersi has addressed the launching ceremony attended by over 100 distinguished guests (Vice President, Ministers and senior civil servants, traditional community leaders (Issims), intellectuals, members of the civil society groups, representatives from the international organizations and members of the Commissions). The President has emphasized in his speech that the government will adopt the recommendations of the Commissions and called upon everybody in Puntland to help them in executing their tasks.

Puntland Government has provided financial assistance to the commission in order to enable the Commission fulfills their duties. After completion of their assignment, the commission presented the findings and recommendations of the study to the Government and other relevant stakeholders, the study covered four areas, the public sector, security, judiciary and the public finance, currently the Government of Puntland are in the process of implementing the recommendations of the commission.
