College in Portugal

From 1976-1982, I was attending school in Portugal, Lisbon. In those six years, I hopped around from course to course, department to department, campus to campus. I never found my area of interest and I missed very pivotal times in Somali history. But calls from home were not coming through due to the fact that my family was hiding their circumstances. From the Ogaden War to the rise of rebellion in Somalia, my family was truly suffering.

I began college at the Universidade de Lisboa (University of Lisbon), very expensive, and I payed for it with Somali Shillings and a few Escudos I had earned on the side; doing small time favors such as bicycle repair, history lessons, and even some chauffeuring.

By the end of the sixth year, I had zero money, an incomplete degree, and my family had been disjointed by the Siad Barre regime. I lived in Liverpool for two years before settling down in Chicago in 1984. I had returned to Somalia and brought back together my family, in 1989.
