Putin Youth Are Taught America Is 'Evil'

Thousands of Pro-Putin youth activists attending a summer camp in central Russia have been hearing warnings that western values are "evil".

Members of NashiThe movement is called Nashi which means "Ours". It was set up in 2005 to combat Western styled colour revolutions.

Its founder, Vasiliy Yakemonko, says it also aims to change the world order and make Russia great again.

The camp is held in a forest by the side of a lake, 250 miles north of Moscow. Ten thousand members have pitched tents and take part in a range of activities, including lectures in politics.

The messages in these classes are overtly anti-western.

One teaches students about the dangers of American expansionism, whilst another imparts Putin's theories on political discourse.

The studies are compulsory and if any Nashi member does not turn up, they are asked to leave the site and have to make their own way home.

For members who find it hard to understand the Kremlin sponsored messages, there is also political theatre.

In the production we saw, Putin's enemies are represented as stooges of the West.

The message is a simple as it is crude. If opposition politicians gain the levers of power, the country's resources will be sold to the West for the price of a drink and Russia will be humbled.

Nashi members are between 15 and 23. Inside the camp pictures of Vladimir Putin hang in pride of place. It feels like the cult of personality is flourishing in 21st century Russia.

Maria tells me that the girls have tee-shirts of the President and some of them want to have his babies.

Alexei meanwhile is more philosophical. He says Putin is a great leader and wants him to stand for a third term - something which is currently banned by the Russian constitution.

Away from the camp, Nashi's campaigns have been marked by their aggression. The British Ambassador to Moscow, Sir Anthony Brenton, was harassed for months after he committed the cardinal sin of attending a conference for Russia's opposition.

Critics argue that Nashi serves no other purpose than being an obedient attack dog for the Kremlin. Its funding is opaque, although it is known that some of its money comes from big businesses trying to curry favour with the President.

The camp is, nonetheless, popular. After the chaos of the 1990s when Russia was on its knees, Soviet styled nation building is welcomed by many people.

If Russia is suffering from a national humiliation, complex patriotic youth groups are perhaps its answer.
