RANDOM LAKE - Disturbing allegations of a 10-month-old girl who was sexually assaulted. Her injuries were so bad she needed surgery.
The assault happened last month, reportedly at a daycare.
Investigators are trying to determine if the sexual assault happened inside the daycare or if it might have been a family acquaintance outside the daycare.
It’s a crime so unbelievable it leaves parents in Random Lake very concerned. “That’s just disgusting. It’s hard to believe it's a small town and you think you’re safe,” said Dewayn Holman.
The 10-month-old girl was dropped off at the Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church's Daycare Center one morning. Later that night her grandmother saw bleeding, swelling and a cut as she changed the baby's diaper. The toddler was rushed to an emergency room where doctors discovered she had been sexually assaulted.
Documents obtained by TODAY’S TMJ4 describe the disturbing injuries the child suffered. The injuries were so serious she needed emergency surgery to repair a laceration.
In an e-mail Saturday, the little girl's father told TODAY'S TMJ4, "Our daughter was in good health when she was dropped off at daycare and when she was picked up, she was in a condition that required hospitalization.
"We entrusted our daughter to their care and feel betrayed. Our concerns right now are ensuring that our daughter is healing from her injuries and making sure that whoever hurt our child is brought to justice."
The father also wrote, "No parent should need to sign off to have a rape kit done on their 10 month old. No parent should need to have their 10 month old tested for sexually transmitted diseases."
The family asks that anyone with information contact the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department.
“We're really quite confident that child was not injured at our childcare center. There’s really no evidence that anything happened to that child at the childcare center,” said Edward Ritger, finance chair at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.
According to the court document, workers at the daycare said the child did have redness in the genital area that day, but no bleeding or swelling was noted. The women who work at the childcare center claim the child left that day a happy, content little girl.
The Sheboygan Press reported over the weekend that court documents revealed that the supervisor of the daycare had initially misled investigators about who was working on the day of the incident.
The daycare director is on leave, as is required by state law. Police have searched her home, the daycare and the church office. While they work to find who is responsible, many parents feel uncomfortable.
"All these days, all the stuff you see on TV and the news and stuff. You don't know who you can trust anymore. It's happening everywhere and I think it's absolutely disgusting,” said Amber Sanders, a concerned parent.
