PKK sets off roadside bomb, 13 wounded

Source: Turkish Weekly
August 13, 2007

Thirteen people, including two civilians, were wounded after a roadside mine planted by the outlawed the PKK went off in southeastern Anatolia.

The attack occurred near the town of Eruh in the Southeast's Siirt province. One of the injured soldiers was a lieutenant, while the 11 others were privates.

All the victims were on a civilian bus traveling to the Görendoruk gendarmerie station when it was attacked by the PKK about 10 kilometers from the terminus. The terrorists detonated a remote-controlled explosive that had been planted near the road. The two civilians were the bus driver, Mehmet Gündüz, and his assistant, Agit Beºtaº.

The injured were taken to the Siirt military hospital by helicopter, and a large number of armored vehicles and troops were sent to the region as reinforcements in the wake of the attack.

A large-scale operation to find the perpetrators is under way.During a visit by Iraq’s prime minister to Ankara last week, Turkey and Iraq agreed to try to root out the PKK. However, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said the Iraqi parliament would have the final say on efforts to halt the terrorist group’s cross-border attacks into Turkey.

Since then, Iraqi Kurds, who control Iraq’s northern provinces and who are accused by Ankara of supporting or at least ignoring the PKK, have cast doubts on Maliki’s ability to implement the deal, saying it was not binding on the Kurdish administration.

Qadir Aziz, described as a special representative of Massoud Barzani, the president of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, said the Iraqi Kurds would not clash with the PKK and reiterated that they did not consider the PKK a terrorist group. “The memorandum of understanding signed by Maliki does not bind us,” he was quoted as saying yesterday. He also claimed that the troubled Maliki government would not be able to fulfill its pledges to Turkey in the fight against the PKK.

The PKK is considered as terrorist organization by Turkey, European Union and the United States laws.
