Somalia: Five more people slain in Hiran

Sun. August 19, 2007 02:55 pm.- By Mohamed Abdi Farah

(SomaliNet) Five more people were killed in clan fighting between Murursade and Hawadle clans which started again in the countryside of Hiran region in central Somalia late Saturday day after 20 slaughtered in the same region, reports say on Sunday.

This brings 25 to the number of people killed in clan-cause within 24 hours. Both rival clans belong to Hawiye, one of the four dominant tribes in Somalia.

Early yesterday heavy fighting erupted in Gorof and Goobo villages of Hiran as it spread to the nearby Galgadud region and left the death of 20 men.

On August 9, nine people were killed in revenge attack near El-Bur town of Galgadud region in central Somalia.

Armed militiamen from Hawadle clan invaded Wabho village 40km east of El-Bur town killing nine men of Murursade clan.

Leading clan elders have been engaged in attempting to establish peace talks between the rival clan militias.

Somalia has a history of clan fighting over the countryside resources like water and grassing for centuries but the traditional elders always stood for sorting out the conflict under a tree as part of the Somali culture.
