ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan successfully tested a new air-launched cruise missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, the military said.

The missile, named Hatf-8 or Ra'ad, was developed in Pakistan and has a range of 350 kilometers (220 miles), an army statement said Saturday.

It said the missile gave its air force a "strategic standoff capability" — the ability to strike over a long distance — and it could be fitted with any type of warhead.

President Gen. Pervez Musharraf congratulated the scientists and engineers who developed the weapon, the statement said, but provided no details of the test.
