Witnesses watched fatal park stabbing

Police make arrest but still are looking to talk with several people about killing in west-end park

A group of people in a west-end park watched as a dispute between two young men escalated into a slaying, police said yesterday as they announced they have made an arrest in the case.

Carlos Tapia, 20, was charged with second-degree murder yesterday in the death of Sharmarke Handouleh, 20.

Handouleh's slaying was the third homicide of the day in Toronto last Wednesday. Police have now made arrests in all three cases.

Handouleh was found in the southeast corner of East Mall Park with several stab wounds to his chest just before midnight. It's unknown what sparked the dispute between him and his attacker, Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond said.

"Some people were there and saw the dispute going on and then there were those that saw both the dispute and the actual homicide take place," Drummond said.

Area residents, who have complained to police and their local councillor about young people partying in the park, reported seeing several people pile into a car and drive off following the stabbing.
