why do most somalis i meet line up to have a debate about politics when it comes to somalia but none seem to know much about economic reforms, education or health systems, business models, workforce management and the list goes on

Duh! Its because fadhi ku dhirir is our official national pastime! Noone cares about the actual answers, its about getting angry and making everyone think your right, even if you repeat the same thing every week.

In general, the Somali experience has been that wealth comes from outside and goes to those in control of the government. Those who made money internally had good government or clan connections.

As a people, Somalis are too xenophobic to welcome tourists or develop industrial production for exterior trade. Also, physical work has always been beneath all noble faraaxs. The educated and financially able seek shah, qat and fadhi ku dirir and leave the actual work for the uneducated and downtrodden, who are in no position to make improvments.

It's a system in stasis, with no mechanism for change.

The schools, and especially the professional schools, are going to have to change this. Along with those returning from the diaspora who have had a different experience.
