Not all American Lutherans agree with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America's decision to "encourage bishops to accept gay clergy," as "Your Voice" columnist Debby Rieselman put it ("Lutherans' opening up to gays a loving act," Aug. 25).

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the second largest Lutheran denomination in America, agrees with the 95 percent of the world's 2 billion Christians - including the largest denomination, the Roman Catholic Church - that homosexuality is a sin. By abandoning that view, the ELCA aligns itself with a small percentage of renegade Protestant groups, such as the Episcopal Church in America (ECUSA). Both it and the ELCA are hemorrhaging members.

Certainly, the majority is not always right. But most of the world's Christian churches - even non-fundamentalist Catholics and Orthodox - hold to the view that homosexuality is a sin. The New Testament says so, and contrary to Rieselman's claim, most Biblical scholars agree.

Supporters of gay ordination argue that the Old Testament's condemnations of homosexuality (especially Leviticus 20) are irrelevant today, like ones prescribing the death penalty for adultery. But Romans 1:18-26, I Corinthians 6:9-11 and I Timothy 1:8-11 all clearly condemn homosexuality. These passages also condemn other sins (kidnapping, alcoholism, lying) - but no ELCA bishops are trying to mainstream those practices, because supporters of gay ordination have cleverly, but dishonestly, conflated this issue with two others: civil rights and reforming the church. But there is no "civil right" to ordination in any religion, for they are allowed to "discriminate" in certain matters.

Actually there is no explicit statement in either of the Christian testaments that says homosexuality is a sin, just that it's frowned upon, like eating pork or drinking alcohol, or cooking a lamb in the milk of its mother.

From a strictly theological point of view, you won't go to hell for being gay.
