Childrens Imagenation

Post by Lil_Cutie.. »

Salaam,

I was wondering, How do you explain the concept of death to children? Especially very young ones at thier prime?

My neice, bless her.. for some time has had a problem with the word 'death', everytime she hears the word her face changes. Just simple things like when my brother was changing a light bulb and said 'this light bulb is dead'.. and when I threw my flowers out (which she adored!) because I said they are 'dieing' . Or when my uncle got a cramp in his leg and screamed,'my legs dead' ..she really got scared. A leg? And then few seconds later he got up and started walking.
I think it all started when her father brought her some fish's, he brought several in a large tank. She fed them and kept them company.. then they started dieing one by one, everyday she would report back to me. Bless her. On top of that, she keeps mentioning to me 'the baby in mommy's stomach is died' ..?? Only that time, its something she can't see.

Anyhow, all this misuse of language call it if you like, is confusing her. Because, my brother replaced the light bulb, her father brought new fishes, I changed my flowers ..etc. So shes totally thrown out by something dieing, how can she comprehend this when things are coming back to life or forgotten and replaced?
Little stuff she picks up on, like today when she came to my house she told me she had heard the news that 6 people died in some disaster.. and then she asked me (i knew this topic was coming for a while)..

''Eedo, when people die, they go into the ground-right?''

I replied, "Yeah.Sax!" (Bracing myself)

"So they go into the ground and stay there?.. so like, I was wondering, they stay they for ever?"

Me: "Yupp..Uhhum, thats right"

"So..they stay they and they grow in the ground?" ..

This completly threw me off.. I didnt know what to say. She is only 4!! Although she is extremly bright for her age MashaAllah, what do you say?
The thought of not growing would probley scare her, especially considering she talks about growing up and life changes so much.

I just said to her, they stay there and they met ''Allah''

Her face light up.. In a pleasent yet baffled way!!
Just the whole concept of Allah is difficult for a child, yet alone death.. Neutral

its dificult walahi .. to be honest ..
turning them to the diin from a early age is a real good idea ..
(coming from experience ..)
that way they are ready for a lot of things and they understand it a lot more ..

good luck cutie

It's better to tell kids the truth without sugar coating.

son, your grandmother cibaadi has died, you will no longer see her nor will she be there when you cry like a baby. She's no longer with us and depending on her actions, deen status, etc..she's either enjoying the windows to paradise or she's burning up.
