The Islamic Community Center of Laurel, adheres to the established Sunnah of sighting the moon in determining the beginning and end of the Islamic months. We encourage members of the community to go out on the evening of Wednesday, September 12 (29th of Shabaan) to sight the hilal.

According to astronomical information, the moon can be sighted that evening in North America (especially far west and south, e.g. San Diego). Therefore the first day of fasting is expected to be Thursday, September 13 and tarawih prayers are expected to begin on Wednesday, September 12 after Salaat ul-Isha - inshaAllah.

If the moon is not sighted on the evening of Wednesday, September 12, we will complete 30 days of Shabaan and the first day of Ramadan will be Friday, September 14, with Tarawih prayers starting on Thursday, September 13.

We will have the Ramadan Announcement posted on the website and sent over the email list as soon as it is confirmed insha'Allah. Please check back on Wednesday evening after 8:30PM for lastest update.
Most Gulf Arabs start Ramadan on Thursday

DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, will start the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on Thursday along with most fellow Gulf Arab states, state media reported on Tuesday.

State religious panels in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain said the crescent moon was sighted after nightfall, signaling the start of Ramadan.

The timing of Ramadan, when the faithful fast from dawn until dusk, can vary in different Muslim countries depending on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the start of the month in Islam's lunar calendar.

Businesses and offices reduce opening hours during the day and often open in the evenings.
