Children starving to death in Somalia
UNICEF
NAIROBI (AFP) - Thousands of children are at risk of dying from malnutrition in central and southern areas of Somalia formerly considered the country's breadbasket, the UN Children Fund (UNICEF) said Wednesday.
"83,000 children in central and southern Somalia suffer from malnutrition - 13,500 of whom are severely malnourished and at risk of dying," it said in a statement released after a recent nutrition survey.
The UN agency said it feared that continued bloodletting in Mogadishu - rocked daily by clashes between Ethiopian-backed government forces and an Islamist-led insurgency - would displace more needy people to these areas.
"Malnutrition is not new to Somalia, however such critical levels in a region known as the country's breadbasket are alarming and point to a deteriorating humanitarian situation," UNICEF added.
According to the agency, the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Somalia has risen from one million to 1.5 million since January.
The Ethiopian army rescued embattled transitional government forces and ousted an Islamist militia that briefly controlled large parts of the country earlier this year.

The price ofwar. For all of you out there who are insisting on continuing the conflit "No matter the price", well kids, this is part of the price.
"feed those somali children if u r a muslim. send them donations"
But if you are not a Muslim don't feed them???
How are you going to send some kid, living in a hut and starving in Yaaq Bari Weyne, a donation????? The problem isn't that food isn't available. The problem is the aide organizations don't have freedom of movement given the bad security.

With all those thousands of Ethiopians solderis...... are you saying that they cant even provide the smallest of security.... especially to those who are far from any batlle front and left under a tree on the outskirts?
Then you have the nerve to ask us to have faith in American backed ethiopians and they puppoet warlord tfg!
This is why we need a change ... and free goverment.. which will come after the exclusion of ethiopia from somalia!

Are you kidding sxb..
if they are not startving then why are risking their lives on those small fishing boats dying to get across to other poor countries like yemen only then to be thrown back into the waters with they hands cuffed behind their backs.. Shaming somalia!
The fact is .. those small town are victimized by theifs and local moryaans...
If they had Local admins.. that looked after the people safety and well beying... it would easily out flurish anywhere else in somalia.. Dont be so daft brother.

Re: Children starving to death in Somalia
nearly 98% of the people going on those boats are hawiyes who walked all the way from dhuuso mareeb to bosaso (500 miles!) or either ethiopians..there are many docus made of these trips just look them up and see for yourself...there is not one single harti (locals) on those boats (well, if you dont count the smugglers)
and you said it yourself, they need local authority. after 17 years the tuulo hawiyes (outside the violence of xamar) cant even set up local admins unlike somaliland or puntland? that tells us something about these people....
