Many wounded' in Somaliland-Puntland gunfight
LAS ANOD, Somalia Sep 20 (Garowe Online) - Heavy fighting broke out overnight Wednesday in relatively quiet northern Somalia after rival troops from Somaliland and Puntland regions clashed, reliable sources said.
The fighting erupted in the late afternoon and continued until 8pm, when sporadic gunfire came to a gradual halt, according to residents in Las Anod, capital of Sool region.
The rival soldiers used pickup trucks mounted with artillery guns, known locally as 'technicals,' in the hours-long battle in a frontiner town roughly 18km northwest of Las Anod.
Abdulkadir Gelle, Puntland's deputy information minister, told local media on Thursday that Puntland troops were attacked in their positions and defended themselves.
He said Somaliland and the "Asmara group" are collectively responsible for the battle.
Mr. Gelle sad that no one who participated at the conference held in Asmara, Eritrea, by Somali opposition figures is welcome in Puntland, adding that delegates at the Asmara conference discussed ways to "prolong suffering in Somalia."
He claimed that Puntland burned two technicals on the Somaliland side and said there were a number of deaths and "many wounded" in the battle, including 2 Puntland soldiers.
There was no word from the Somaliland administration, except an information ministry statement yesterday blaming Puntland for sparking the gunfight.
Las Anod was calm Thursday, but residents said there was a lot of military activity in the region. Col. Abdisamad Ali Shire, Puntland army commander who is from Sool region, arrived in Las Anod today leading a military convoy from the administrative capital Garowe.
Somaliland, composed of the northwestern regions of Somalia, unilaterally declared independence in 1991 citing colonial-era boundaries that include the regions of Sool and Sanaag.
No country in the world has recognized an independent Somaliland to date.
Neighboring Puntland administers itself as a regional autonomy within federal Somalia. Puntland leaders also lay claim to Sool and Sanaag regions, arguing that the majority of the disputed regions’ inhabitants share clan bloodline with their brethren in Puntland.
