Kulmiye is onboard a sinking ship
With the right plan and careful execution you can conduct a convention that meets the objectives. This needs step by step guidance on developing the overall plan and tracking the details. When you are beginning to plan the convention, all possibilities must be considered. The best conventions are those that engage, celebrate, create connections and provide dialogue among attendees. It is best to search for ways to break the ice to involve participants and create a favorable environment.
Each component of event is carefully detailed. It is best to tap all available resources of both the facility you are booking and the audience. Of course the projected number of attendees will determine the size of facilities needed. The chairs in the meeting hall should be adjusted to the people attending the convention. The timing of each session and even the beverages and the snacks are carefully planned. The time of arrival of the various delegates need to be pre-planned so that delegates could come well before the convention begins so that the lodging arrangements is fixed properly.
There must be a budget for the meeting. It is often said that money is the mother’s milk of politics. Candidates need money to have any hope of winning a contested political office. A simple rule that holds is spending more money than your opponent and you are likely to win the election. Candidates are required to raise money from their constituents well in time. It is not reasonable to expect the delegates to meet their expenses from their pockets. The candidates of Kulmiye should not expect free lunch from the delegates that are coming for their support.
It is unfortunate that Kulmiye is being split into tribal sub divisions and could not set a date for the convention. They have postponed the convention many times and they cannot tell you exactly when the convention will be held. The frustration of the voters is mounting every day and the credibility of the party is at stake. From now the people are questioning how these leaders will rule the country when they cannot organize a convention.
It is obvious that the executive person lost the ability to provide leadership policy guidance to manage and direct the operations, programs of the party. Often the executive will have to rely on intuition, inter personal relations and political skills in deciding how to manage a particular circumstance. On the other hand the organizing committee lacks skills and expertise to organize such an event properly. Can any body believe that even the delegates coming from the regions have not been informed until today?
The financial package that the party is providing for the delegates is not known until today and I am afraid there will be discrepancy in the number of delegates estimated to attend. The connection between the party headquarters and their affiliates in the regions is non existent. Kulmiye is the party that lost the presidency on a narrow margin and there presence was not felt in the political scene all these years. They have not put forward any political agenda how they will handle the deteriorating political and socio-economic issues. They have not addressed in any occasion the corruption that plagued the country, the civic society, human rights and the gender balance.
It is obvious and nobody can deny that the party is exercising ethnicity in running the party platform. The general assembly delegates have been calculated on tribal lines based on their narrow constituents in the parliamentary elections. This is the first time that this criteria is used by a party in Somaliland. One party held a convention before and the general assembly was allotted according to regions. Only the capital was allocated 2 members more than the other five regions.
It is the responsibility of the executive of the party to be able to discuss the implications of any significant change in the environment in which the party exists and to help shape the policy directions for the party. The election date is on our door step and our party is pre-occupied to hold a convention that will nominate the person who will contest in the party ticket.
Honestly Kulmiye needs a quick reshuffle and reform in the party leadership and to give way to new bloods of young charismatic candidates in the party ticket and if rapid changes are not made quickly the party will contrast un expected problems that is likely to turn into disaster.
