Kismayo is reportedly calm following fierce fighting between two Marehan sub-clans, sources in Kismayo confirmed on Monday. The fighting started between the 'reer Siyaad Hussein, and the Eli sub-clans of the Marehan on 13 March over the killing of a reer Siyaad Hussein man, allegedly by the Eli, sources told IRIN.
Retaliatory attacks by both sub-clans followed the killing, according to the sources. The worst fighting took place on Tuesday when two people were killed and four others injured in the centre of Kismayo. The two sides fought pitched battles for almost an hour, sources said. Marehan clan elders intervened and reportedly disarmed the two sides by Wednesday. According to sources, the elders managed to resolve the conflict and the situation is now under control.
Meanwhile a delegation from the Transitional National Government (TNG) is reported to have visited the Kismayo area holding talks with community leaders and briefing them on reconciliation efforts.
