Dhikr, remembering Allah (S.W.T.,) has many benefits. One of those is that is brings the Muslim closer to Allah (S.W.T.) and strengthens one's faith. I pray that this Ramadan all of those who receive this lecture learns the importance of Dhikr and applies it to their everyday lives Insha’Allah.
Dhikr: Eight Words and Their Benefits
A Muslim who doesn't remember Allah (S.W.T.) is like a dead person. The Muslim is, as stated, similar to an empty house, filled with dust, and cobwebs and creepy crawlies. This is the state of the heart of a Muslim who doesn't apply Dhikr of Allah to their lives. As stated by one of the companions, the Dhikr of the heart is like water to a fish. Without water, the fish is surely to die. Without Dhikr, the heart is surely to spiritually die. Allah (S.W.T.) tells us in the Qur’an to remember Him a lot. He (S.W.T.) didn’t say, a little, or sometimes. Allah (S.W.T.) said, remember Him a lot. This shows how important Dhikr is to a Muslim’s life.
Wondrous things happen to a Muslim who applies Dhikr in their everyday lives. Narrated by Abu Hurayrah, the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said: "Allah (S.W.T.) says: I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than him . . .”
So Allah (S.W.T.) will remember us when we remember Him, and glorify Him and His beautiful creation. Isn't this enough for us to know, that Allah will remember us, when we remember Him? Furthermore, Allah (S.W.T.) sends down the Angels to the Muslim who is glorifying Allah (S.W.T.). Allah also blesses the believer with pure light on their face when they apply Dhikr in their everyday lives, and Insha’Allah, at the moment of their death, their tongue will easily remember Allah and state, as every believer wishes to say at their moment of death, "La Illaha ill Allah, Muhammad al Rasool Allah" (There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger). Wouldn't we all wish to die like this? Wouldn't we all wish to grow closer to Allah (S.W.T.)? Wouldn't we want our hearts to soften and beam from love and strong eman (belief) to Allah (S.W.T.)?
Insha’Allah sisters and brothers who want to purify their hearts, strengthen their faith, and become closer to Allah, there are eight words of glorification to say every day to Allah (S.W.T.). These eight words only take twenty to twenty five minutes, we can say them on our way to work, or school, we can say them while cleaning, etc. Instead of counting sheep we can apply Dhikr and gain rewards that we will need.
On the Day of Judgement we will be faced with our scales of good deeds and bad deeds, and if we have 55 good deeds, for instance, and 56 bad deeds, wouldn't that mean we are going to the hell fire because the bad deed was just one more than the good deeds! Oh how we would have wished to apply Dhikr in our lives, one of the easiest ways to gain good deeds. So may Allah bless us all as the dwellers of Paradise Insha’Allah.
1. Astaghfer Allah {seeking forgiveness from Allah} (Amount required to say not stated by Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.)). Rewards of saying this:
Every problem you have will have a solution by Allah's will. 2. with every worry you have, Allah (S.W.T.) will send you peace. 3. Rizk (wealth and health blessed to you by Allah) will come to you InshaAllah. 4. Your sins will be erased. The Prophet Muhammad used to say "Astaghfer Allah" 100 times (Sunnah).
2. SobhanAllah {Glorifying Allah (S.W.T.) and His Creation}.
Rewards: Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) in a Hadeeth asked his companions, is it too hard to win 1000 (one thousand) rewards? The companions asked him, how? Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) replied by saying SobhanAllah 100 (one hundred) times you will have 1000 rewards or 1000 sins erased.
3. SobhanAllah wa Bihamdihi (pronounced “Beehamdiihi”).
Two Rewards: 1) Whoever said it 100 (one hundred) times will have their sins erased by the grace of Allah even if it was as much as the foam of the sea. Or 2) a palm tree will be planted for them in Paradise.
4. SobhanAllah Al Azeem: (Amount required to say is not stated).
Rewards: The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) said these are two words light on the tongue, heavy on your scale of good deeds, and Allah loves those who say it.
5. La Illaha ill Allah: This is the best Dhikr to say. What does it do to the heart? It puts strong belief in your heart, renews your faith, as faith gets torn and old, just like clothes. (Amount required to say not stated).
6. La Illaha ill Allah, Wahdahu La Shareeka Lahu, Lahu Al Mulk, Lahu Al Hamdu, Wa Huwa Ala Kul Shay-an Kadeer.
Rewards: If said 100 (one hundred) times, it will be liked the Muslim have given £2000 pounds to charity. 100 (one hundred) sins will be erased. And Allah protects the Muslim from the devil all day.
7. La Hawla Wala Kuwata Ela Bel-laih: There is no Power or Authority except Allah.
Rewards: This is a treasure of Paradise. Prophet Abrahim (as) said to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) “Salaam” to the Prophet, and then said that if a muslim says these words, Allah will plant them a tree in Jannah.
8. Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest).
Finally, do we say Dhikr with our hearts or with our tongues? The highest reward is to say it with your heart and with your tongue at the same time. Some Muslims find it difficult to say Dhikr with their hearts and take that as an excuse not to do Dhikr at all. For those, the advice is, say the Dhikr with your tongues even if your heart is not present. InshaAllah after a while your heart will attend the Dhikr. The heart is like a car, after a while, it will warm up and start running. InshaAllah by achieving to say the Dhikr with your heart and mind and tongue, a Muslim will feel more connected with Allah and praise Allah in everyday that he is blessed by Allah to live. May Allah forgive me for any errors I have made, and may Allah reward us all and bless us for striving in His cause, Ameen.
