What exactly is wrong with our people in this country?

I'm 22 years old. Born in the United Kingdom, one of the very few generations of Somalia families who came to the United Kingdom to work in the 60s and not emigrated because of a civil war. I used to attend primary and reveal my background and people would question as to where it's location is; but nowadays it's so common and become affliated with all the wrong aspects of what a hard working nation should be, can I blame them? No i can't. All i ever for the majority is see society of people on handouts. Why is it the Somali population within the UK so useless? whhy is the consenus on those that work so low? a official Govt consenus produced released juswt embarassly showed how pathetic we are within this nation, we dont offer nothing back. we're now in our "second generation" of being in this capital yet the graduation level/ work level is at a all time low. I just do not understand why the hell are somalians so lazy. And the youth of today is among the worst. I'm sad to say but i'm sick and tired of this. I came from a excellant background a good working family who have never been on benefits and never asked but always gave. why cant this mentality be adopted onto other families? i'm not saying all but the MAJORITY. I'm sick and tired of going through southall just to see our "own people" degrade themselves by acting like complete losers. do some work and dont strive to become such second rate citizens I'm sure Somalians are capable of more but I fail to see and so does every other race in this nation. it's a sad, embarassing and pathetic state we have gotten ourselves into and instead of looking to others to get us out we should have enough common sense to get ourselves out.

My simple motto has always been - do work and prevail. I've stuck by this and managed a Degree with Masters at a established University in Accountancy.

oh and Eid Mubarak. I celebrate by studying and reading to progress my knowledge of either religon or my profession. Not to be out in the streets becoming a nuisance.

I agree on the immigrant part coming here alone, but that alone should be a motivation to succedd and prove to his/her parents in Junnah/Back in Somalia that they are a productive member of society but the reality is we are moving backwards not forwards and many many stats prove this, In my spare time i do a LOT of politicial research hoping to follow my fathers footsteps in the politicial field and I work closely with Labour/Conservatives MP within the Ealing Borough, I come across alot of census regarding the work rates/ unemployment stats/ crime stats and etc. and to say it is shocking how it has risen when a Immigrating population in it's 2ND / 3RD Generation should rapidly decrease not increase. I am merely trying to gather a perspective on this and not provoke agurments like marcussmith.

If what you say is true Miltary(of which i'm not procasting your statement, how can you explain the crime increase among the recorded police quantitive data captured via Somali males under the ages of 20 for indictable crimes? The Job centre official cenus shows a increase of benefits of 4.53%. everything that has been documentated shows Somalis increasing in the sense of crime, welfare.

Cappy democrat, from reading your post, I can sense real saddness and disappointment at the dire situation Somalis in the Uk are in. Its too bad there aren't more people like you who are critically examing the community's problems rather than just being complacent. I am sick of Somali Ukers using every excuse in the book such as : we're new immigrants, the media is exaggerating and all that other crap. BE HONEST, stop hiding from the truth. I'm not from the Uk yet everyone outside of it knows that the Somalis there are known for living off benefits for years. Its just so embarrassing that instead of being grateful for the opportunity to live in the west, they don't make something out of themselves. I AM ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED!

My grandfather came from a poor family but on his own, he built an empire. Did it happen over night? Absolutey not! It took a lot of work, dedication and commitment. I'm afraid that's what is missing with Somalis in the Uk. They are not thinking of long term goals and how to better their family because somehow they believe Somalia will get better and they can go back. That chances of Somalia getting better is not something that will happen for many years. Somalis in the Uk have to think of the present. Taking benefits is a disgrace and absolutely unIslamic if one doesn't need it and can work for a living. I think the thing that is killing Somalis is that taking handouts is not seen as a negative and something they're entitled to. Being on benefits affects the moral of people and unfortunately habits are hard to break unless one takes steps to fix them. Khat addiction is also a huge problem and prevents people from being working citizens.

We need more people like Cappy democrat to question why they live like this and look for solutions to improve. My heart really goes out to hard working Somalis in the Uk because this stigma of being "lazy, benefit scroungers, violent, high crime" must absolutely eat at you. To all the Somalis in Uk making something out of yourself, keep your head up, don't let these preconceived notions affect your self-esteem, cause self-hatred and cause you to alienate yourself from the community. A true mark of someone's character is being their for your people when they need you the most. Changes can happen but they can only start with honest communications rather than making excuses and avoiding the real issues.

For once and for all, I think there needs to be some sort of town meeting, allowing for open dialogue between Somalis in the Uk. Organize projects on helping people get off benefits. Cappy democrat, I think you are the perfect person to help Somalis in the Uk. Your family has been living here for decades and are well established in the British lifestlye, why don't you help Somalis especially new refugees who haven't yet been mentally affected by the situation in London become assimiliated.
