A mother told a court today of the moment she found her 13-year-old daughter having sex with the child's tennis coach.

Former tennis professional Claire Lyte, 29, is on trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of five counts of sexual activity with a child.

Lyte, of Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands, who was at the time of the allegations a coach at the Lawn Tennis Association Academy, denies the charges at Liverpool Crown Court.

Today the alleged victim's mother told how Lyte had appeared to be copying her daughter's hairstyle and offering to baby-sit in the months leading up to their discovery in the girl's bedroom of her Merseyside home.

She then told of the incident, in October 2005, when she returned home early from a party to find coach and student in bed.

The mother, who cannot be identified, said: "I went into the sitting room and noticed there was a newspaper on the table which I don't buy, I then went upstairs and saw two pairs of tennis shoes outside my daughter's bedroom.

"I walked into the room and saw my daughter and Claire naked on the bed." She added that she saw them a performing sex act.

"I was in complete shock and I screamed and they became aware that I was there. My daughter jumped up and ran off and Claire pulled the bed sheet over her head.

"Claire stayed in the bed under the sheet, and I shouted at both of them to get some clothes on and come downstairs.

"I was screaming at Claire, 'Get out, what have you done, what have you done to my child, you are nothing but a paedophile'.

"They came downstairs dressed and my daughter sat down in a chair and curled into a ball, Claire sat with her head in her hands.

"I was in complete and utter shock, I kept asking why. I couldn't believe what I had seen."

The mother explained that they sat in the living room talking about what had happened for about a couple of hours.



She said: "Claire just kept telling me she loved my daughter.

"I kept saying, 'She is 13'. My daughter just cried and cried. The phone went and it was my friend asking me to come back to the party.

"I was just in complete shock and needed to get out of there. I took my daughter and we sat in the car and never spoke a word.

"We got to the party and sat in the corner in silence. I told Claire to wait at the house, she was hysterical and I wanted to talk to her when we were composed.

"We stayed at the party for about an hour and a half.

"Claire said it was the first time it had happened and that she cared so much for my daughter."

Lyte's defence will argue that the incident never took place, that there was no sexual relationship between the defendant and the 13-year-old girl.

The defence claims the allegations have been invented by the mother, who was upset that the young girl's tennis career was coming to an end.
