A new statement says the Bodycote Testing Group has found significant amounts of lead in more than half of all red brand-name lipsticks.

US consumer rights group has announced that 61% of the lipsticks had detectable lead levels of 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm) exceeding the FDA's 0.1 ppm limit for lead in candy.

According to the report, no lead was reported in some less expensive brands such as Revlon, while the more expensive Dior Addict, Cover Girl and L'Oreal contained high levels.

Lead can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as reduced school performance and increased aggression, it has also been linked to infertility and miscarriage. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association trade group has stated that lead was a naturally occurring element and was not intentionally added to cosmetics.

In response to this report, L'Oreal has asserted that all the brands of the L'Oreal Group were in full compliance with FDA regulations as well as the international market's safety requirements.
