Abdi.Ismail,
Mogadishu is Farsi for "The seat of the King", i.e. the capital. I assume it was given by early Persian traders.
"Black Hawk Down" was the defining event that caused the international community to abandon it's previous extensive support of government in Somalia. Both the last 16 years and current events indicate the Clinton Administration made a sensible decision in getting out.
I for one do not consider Black Hawk Down a Somali victory.

Grant,
It was a Habar Gidir victory.
Had we lost we would have been decimated by our enemies
After the killing of the peaceniks of the HG at the Abdi House, all HG factions united to fight the UNOSOM & US forces because they assassinated our peacemakers and moderates and drove us into the Hawkish factions lead by Aideed, Qeybdiid, and Caato.

AW,
Don't you think that's a big part of the problem, right there? Aidiid wanted to control Somalia, but he didn't speak for the Somali people as a whole.
I don't think the civil war can end until the Hawiye and Darood can live together on neutral ground, and I don't think that can happen again until the capital is divorced from the Hawiye degan.
The state of Maryland created the District of Columbia and deeded it to the US Federal Government even as the city of Washinton was being planned. It is an example I think Somalis will do well to emulate. I have seen a Federal District on some putative Somali maps and hope it is actually implemented.
A federal government needs to have exclusive control of it's own capital.

Re: why does somalia = black hawk down ?
Grant,
This war was again another case of internal clans using foreigners to push their political agendas.
Many of the ProUNOSOM factions were deeply hostile to Caydiid's SNA. They twisted the intelligence and painted him as a two bit warlord who was bent on seizing power by force and not consensus.
If Caydiid wanted to seize power by force, he could have done in Jan. 26, 1991 when Barre was overthrown and could have declared himself President instead of trying to find a solution by consensus.

A/Wahab,
You have reached Somali Boqor's status as the most delusional person on Somalinet. Caydid was a warloard who had intentions on gaining power for a long time. When the regime was collapsing and things were falling apart he found his oppritunity and was able to rally the entire Hawiye masses. Its well known that the USC had a big shir and they elected Ali Mahdi as the president, restaurant owner or not. This is when Caydid became jealous and started the 4 month war. As far as he not "taking control of the country" what kind of nonsense is that? He tried to take over the country by force and for a while it looked like he just might. However his advances into the Jubba area with his ally Jess, his advance into the North (Galkacyo) into Gedo, and finally into Baydhabo were crushed. His plan was to take the country by force, but Alxamdurialh Allah saved Somalis from this. As far as the whole "Victory against the UN" I fail to see how thousands of civilians laid out and 18 Rangers killed can be be called a "victory". Whats the ratio in colateral damage? Like 60-1? I even know a lady in my area who lost her pops in that attack.

Luq,
U are fast becoming an apologist for everything that the Barre regime did. One has to be impartial at certain moments in their life and call the shots as they see it.
You have failed to put any criticisms against the regime's dark underbelly.
So go ahead and admit there was a dark side to the regime.
